We have submitted our evidence to the Curriculum and Assessment Review. Our submission asserts that all young people should be entitled to careers education, with work experience as an integral component, embedded within a broad and balanced curriculum. This approach will help equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for further education, training, and employment. Achieving this is essential to ensuring that the education system provides fair life chances for every young person. Read more about our key messages for the review and where to find our full submission. ?? #educationmatters #careerseducation #workexperience

Just wrapped a very rewarding week in which we hosted our first virtual work experience for more than 70 students across the UK, supported by Speakers for Schools. Outreach opportunities are one of the best parts of working at the SKA Observatory. The students spoke to 14 members of our team (pictured) across science, engineering, project management and business enabling, and five from our UK partner STFC during three days of discussions and activities. Listening to the students reflect on the experience and the impact it had on them was quite special. One noted that their eyes had been opened to what to consider beyond the individual tasks of a given role, from the work environment to the team around you: “It’s not just about the work, it’s about life.” Words of advice from the speakers were still being repeated in breakout rooms hours later, including my favourite from Betty Kioko: “Give yourself permission to pivot in your career.” I wish we could know all the things they’ll go on to achieve. Thank you to Speakers for Schools for giving us this opportunity, especially Jenni Marshall (McCallen), Kelly Garrigan-Cooper and Karen Hillis for guiding us through it all. #education #TeamSKA

High-quality #career provision is transformational for young people. Ten years on from the introduction of the #GatsbyBenchmarks, Gatsby Charitable Foundation has launched 'Good Career Guidance: The Next Ten Years.' The report outlines changes designed to ensure that the Gatsby Benchmarks have an even greater impact on young people. The report highlights five main themes that have informed the updates: 1. Placing careers at the heart of education and leadership. 2. Increasing attention to inclusion, especially for disadvantaged young people and those with SEND, who may need additional support. 3. Emphasising flexible delivery of varied encounters and experiences, including the use of technology alongside—not instead of—in-person activities. 4. Focusing on the use of information and data to support young people’s informed decision-making, and tailoring support to individual needs. 5. Embedding the engagement of parents and carers into planning, with more emphasis on sharing information to help support their child. Effective career provision is essential for improving outcomes for young people, supporting them in becoming informed, confident, and inspired about their futures, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to transition into employment. The Gatsby Benchmarks have provided a framework to strategically approach career education, helping to raise the importance and visibility of careers guidance. #goodcareersguidance #socialmobility

As a Speakers for Schools member , last week I invited students from Villiers High School in Southall to Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) town centre. As well as a visit to Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, we discussed the challenges and opportunities in Ealings regeneration and the role stakeholders play in delivering its buildings and infrastructure . Many thanks to Mandar Puranik, Laura McLean, Vincent Walsh at Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) for engaging with us to hear how the town centre can be better shaped to attract more youngsters from across the borough . Thanks also the Art& Design teachers at Villiers High School who continually work hard to ensure that students at the school are given an opportunity to explore professions in art, design, architecture and engineering. The day was captured by Jasmine Sandhu an Ealing based art photographer.
