Women in STEM Leadership Expert ★ I help STEM departments/institutions to develop career readiness programs/initiatives for women/girls at their organization so that they can improve their retention outcomes.
This month, I've been talking about the importance of Philanthropy, as a foundation for having a successful life and career in STEM. I want to end this month by highlighting an amazing organization that I volunteered my time as a mentor for the Generation YES program of Speak Out Sisterhood which is founded and led by a current STEM student Generation YES, is an eight-week remote internship program for college women aged 18-21. They are each matched with one of their partner organizations and work in a team of other interns to investigate a key barrier to women's advancement in the workplace. The project I mentored which is mentioned below was focused on examining and finding solutions to stereotypes and stigmas women face in STEM. Congrats to all the interns and Speak Out Sisterhood Please check out their work and consider how you can pay it forward.
I am proud to announce that I have completed my 8-week GenerationYes Internship with Speak Out Sisterhood! This journey has been incredibly rewarding and has given me both a greater understanding of the challenges women face in STEM and the skills to take meaningful steps toward change. Today, my team had the privilege to pitch policy recommendations to Richard Watkins, PhD of the Science Policy Action Network. Our goal: to empower women in STEM by promoting self-confidence and addressing stereotypes and stigmas that continue to impact the workforce. With invaluable guidance from our advisor, Jessica Ellen King, and our guest expert, Dr. Scyatta Wallace, we researched various ways individual company policies and visual representation can combat these barriers, and we were proud to present our findings. A huge thank you to my amazing teammates, Olivia Graham and Nasi Bongweni! This experience was only possible with your dedication and collaboration. Throughout this internship, I also had the opportunity to further develop my leadership skills through weekly activities in time management, networking, negotiation, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy. This experience has been deeply meaningful to me. Not only has it strengthened my personal skills, but it has also highlighted the power of policy in creating a more inclusive future for women in STEM. #WomenInSTEM #GenerationYes #SpeakOutSisterhood #SPAN
