?? Poseidon CO? injection test commences –a key step for UK CCS
The CCSA is delighted to highlight a major milestone in CCS from member Carbon Catalyst Limited. The Poseidon CO? injection test has officially begun, marking the first CO? injection in UK waters. If successful, this test will pave the way for a Final Investment Decision in 2027 and commercial CO? storage by 2029.
The Poseidon Project is a CCS initiative in CCSA member Perenco's Leman gas field in the Southern North Sea. With the potential to store up to 1 billion tonnes of CO?, the project is set to play a major role in decarbonising the UK, with an initial injection capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year (Mtpa), scaling up to 40 Mtpa by 2034.
With an initial capacity of 1.5 Mtpa, scaling up to 40 million tonnes annually, Poseidon is set to be one of the largest CCS projects in Northwest Europe. This is a huge step for the UK’s net zero ambitions, industrial sustainability, and energy security.
??? While CCUS deployment is underway, more projects like Poseidon are essential to meet climate targets and ensure the long-term sustainability of key industries. The Poseidon project proves that CCUS is not just a concept—it’s happening. The CCSA continues to work with governments, industry, and stakeholders to advance projects like this at pace.
