Join us for our last evening meeting of 2024 with SPE Distinguished Lecturer, Adam Donald of SLB. Adam presents 'Insightful Geomechanical Measurements for Converting Existing Hydrocarbon Reservoirs to Carbon Storage'. As the industry transitions from traditional hydrocarbon exploration and development into new energy and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), formation integrity becomes more integral for asset longevity. For instance, many depleted fields are being assessed for CCS, but these depleted fields rarely have enough information within the overburden to assess geological seals or caprock integrity. J. Adam Donald is the Technical Director for Geomechanics and Wellbore Acoustics with Reservoir Performance Division, SLB, based in Dubai, UAE. He joined SLB in 1998 as a wireline field engineer has held field, technical, and management positions in Canada, USA, Norway, Malaysia, France, Romania, and United Arab Emirates. His area of focus has been on applications of wellbore sonic and image data on geomechanics, geophysics, and petrophysics workflows. When: Wednesday 11th December 2024 at 6pm. Where: Union Kirk, 333 Union Street, Aberdeen AB11 6BS (entrance from Bon-Accord Street). What: Adam's presentation will be followed by Q&A, networking and a 2-course dinner with soft drink or wine. There is still time to submit your abstract for Seismic 2025! Still not sure whether to go for it? Let's hear from one of our technical committee members on why he thinks you should! ?? Paul Mitchell, Principal Geophysicist at Harbour Energy, has served as a member of the Seismic organising committee since its inception in 2016, and chaired the conference in 2018 and 2019. He believes that the conference has grown over those years to become Aberdeen's premier geophysics forum, and a vital part of the industry. We asked Paul what sort of abstracts he is most hoping to receive this time around: "Aberdeen's energy sector is increasingly diverse, with projects encompassing the entire lifecycle of oil and gas field development, as well as the energy transition. Abstracts from any part of the business cycle would be appreciated. Geophysical techniques have consistently been developed and implemented in the North Sea, ranging from early 2D seismic to 4D full-waveform imaging, and everything in between. Currently, it is a pioneer in Carbon Capture and Storage. Abstracts that highlight the progress of these technologies would be greatly appreciated, especially for projects located within the UK's continental shelf." Here's why Paul thinks you should get involved... "Seismic 2025 provides a great opportunity to showcase your company's projects. It provides a forum for seasoned professionals to discuss the latest technologies, while for early career professionals it provides a great opportunity to expand their networks and develop their skills. Seismic offers a supportive environment to share your work and grow your career." Do you have something that fits the bill? Do you want to be part of our Seismic community? Submit an abstract, take an exhibition stand, or support the event through sponsorship! All of these are great ways to get involved! ?? Exciting news! We're thrilled to announce George Brown from Gray's School of Art as the winner of the 2025 Offshore Achievement Awards trophy design competition! The trophies are kindly sponsored by IMRANDD This prestigious competition, part of the 38th annual OAA awards, sponsored by Bilfinger, challenged talented 3D Design students to create a trophy that captures the spirit of excellence in the energy industry. Four outstanding students presented their concepts to our expert panel of six judges, with George's innovative design emerging as the winner! ?? George's creative process was truly unique. He explains: "My design process was holistic, encompassing thoughtful design and meticulous project management. I sought to honour every contributor, every industry, and the many methods that make such achievements possible." Using an innovative approach he calls "companionship design," George carried his prototypes with him throughout development - from initial mock-ups using coffee stirrers and blue tack to sophisticated clay modeling and AI techniques! This hands-on approach helped him perfect every detail of the design. "The final design draws inspiration from the turbine, abstracted to symbolise the industry's connection to the past, present, and future," George shares. "I aimed to create a piece that not only acknowledges but celebrates the achievements that continue to propel us forward." ?? OAA Committee Member and bp Geophysicist Nandini Nagra was impressed: "Each idea was so different, and it was evident that a huge amount of thought and research went into their trophy designs. The chosen winner, George, hit all aspects of the brief and created a trophy which embodies the changing industry, with a nod to its past. I can't wait to see the final product!" Want to see these stunning trophies in person? Join us at our black-tie ceremony on March 13th at P&J Live in Aberdeen, where they'll be presented to this year's outstanding achievers! ?? #OAA2025 #OffshoreAchievementAwards #EnergyIndustry #Innovation #Design #GraysSchoolOfArt #Aberdeen #EnergyTransition #Sustainability Alan Dick Alexander Neame Chris Stewart Clara Altobell FEI Colin Black, FEI Diane Wood MBE Elizabeth McAlpine Erlend Corrigall Glen McLellan Graham Dallas Hamish Hogg Ian Mills Ian Phillips Innes Auchterlonie Ken Macrae Kenny McAllister Lorraine Mutch Louise Martin Michael Hartley Mojtaba Moradi
