Rising Erosion Post-Wildfires: A Growing Threat to California’s Landscapes A new report from the USGS reveals that erosion following wildfires in California has significantly increased since 1984, posing short term threats to ecosystems, water quality, and community safety. While erosion rates can be reduced as vegetation recovers, todays severe megafires can result in longer term impacts including soil loss, landslides, and water quality impacts. This study underscores the need for sustainable land management practices that increase ecosystem resilience and post fire erosion control measures to mitigate these impacts and protect our vulnerable landscapes.
