SPARK at Stanford is a translational research program with over 13 years of success translating academic biomedical discoveries from laboratory to patient care. Since its founding in 2006 at Stanford University, the program has graduated 117 programs, of which 43 were licensed to startup companies, 13 licensed to existing companies, and 17 in clinical trials, amounting to a success rate of 62%. Through a unique combination of mentorship and financial support, the program shepherds exciting academic discoveries through preclinical discovery hand in hand with over 200 volunteer industry advisers and seed funding to reach exciting outcomes. SPARK’s program provides access to specialized knowledge and technical expertise regarding drug and diagnostic development to bridge the gap from bench to bedside. SPARK GLOBAL is a network of academic institutions and organizations around the world that have adopted the translational research model pioneered by SPARK at Stanford. SPARK GLOBAL comprises over 60 institutions in 23 countries with hundreds of translational programs that transcend borders.

Day 1 of the SPARK Europe Showcase is well underway! 76 projects and companies from across the European SPARK cohorts have gathered at Millennium Point Birmingham to showcase their groundbreaking solutions to unmet clinical needs. Behind it all? SPARK The Midlands. The first UK branch of the international programme, which comes as part of Aston University’s active involvement in the delivery of the West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator - WMHTIA. SPARK, founded by Stanford University, is a global preclinical accelerator supporting academics, healthcare professionals and entrepreneurs in bringing their healthcare products into real world clinical use. Here in the West Midlands, SPARK has made headway, supporting 20 innovators with expert-led workshops and gaining access to clinical trials and sources of funding – raising ￡10m+ follow on funding in less than 15 months.
