March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the incredible contributions of women throughout history and recognize the ongoing work of trailblazers who are shaping the future. “I don’t ask why.??I ask, what’s next?” was the mantra of our favorite First Lady, Do?a Henrietta Boggs.??She was one of the most inspiring women I have ever met.? Tillie Olsen was a young woman from Nebraska who found herself in California, participating in union organizing, reporting on strikes, and striving to be an author during a time when it was difficult for a woman to become a writer. She went on to become one of the most important and influential feminist authors of the 20th century.??Check out “I Stand Here Ironing” as a powerful example of her writing! Together, we’re creating safe spaces where people can come together, listen, and understand one another—even on the toughest topics. Living Room Conversations is a nonpartisan organization committed to bridging divides and encouraging civil discourse. Annie Caplan, Director of Engagement at Living Room Conversations, says: “Real conversations happen when people feel heard and respected. This free event explores how long-term care of cemeteries is created, expressed and supported, particularly in historically Black cemeteries.? This is a topic we care a lot about.??We explored the topic in Episode 3 of our podcast The People’s Recorder and our host Chris Haley made an award-winning doc about preserving historic African American cemeteries called Unmarked.??Cemeteries are a place to remember and honor the loved ones we’ve lost.??But they also tell the story of our communities.??They are an important part of our history that needs to be preserved and protected.? Today we remember Japanese-American artist Miné Okubo. During World War 2, Okubo and her family were forcibly incarcerated in camps. Okubo used her art to bear witness in her visual memoir, Citizen 13660. That book helped pave the way for a presidential apology and reparations for the injustice.
