A new study in Proceedings of the Royal Society, co-authored by? Spark’s Charles Brooke, explores practical, science-based strategies for reducing agricultural methane emissions. The review highlights that we need: ?? Advances in methane measurement for more accurate tracking ?? Scalable solutions, from feed additives and improved manure management to genetic selection & breeding: ?? Policy approaches to drive real, verifiable reductions Achieving meaningful methane reductions requires collaboration across academia, industry, and policy. Congrats, Sam Abernethy! ??
?? The Big Reveal: Inflection Awardees 2025. We are excited to reveal the top 30 young scientists in the world, selected as winners of the inaugural Inflection Award. With over 500 applications from researchers at leading global institutions, these 30 individuals truly stood out. They exemplify the type of bold, decisive action that Inflection was designed to support and amplify. Inflection exists because, in uncertain times, we choose action. We empower the next generation by creating meaningful connections to support their journey from potential to real-world impact. Organised by Marble, Backed by Breakthrough Energy Fellows and the Quadrature Climate Foundation, and supported by our 17 judges, 23 speakers, and event partner STATION F, Inflection is a great example of the collective effort essential for meaningful progress. Today we mark the inflection point in our fight against climate change. To the climate community: scientists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors - each of you play a critical role in supporting and nurturing these young changemakers. With global representation in this year’s cohort, we encourage you to connect, reach out, and meet our awardees. Your involvement, mentorship, and collaboration can amplify their impact and accelerate solutions to climate change. Together, we can get it done. Let’s get to work. Last week, Charles Brooke—Spark’s Livestock Enteric Methane Mitigation Program Lead—spoke at IFC - International Finance Corporation, University of Chicago's Innovation Commission for Climate Change, Food Security, and Agriculture, and the Market Shaping Accelerator’s ‘Catalyzing Innovation: Scaling Solutions for Climate and Agriculture’ event, sharing a vision for an advance market commitment for approaches to livestock methane reduction. Market signals are not yet drawing sufficient innovation toward our greatest challenges in livestock sustainability. This type of market mechanism could be a game changer worldwide, driving innovation and adoption of new sustainable practices.

Spark is excited to announce our next monthly methane removal webinar on March 11 at 12 PM EST, where we will host Prof. Jessica Haskins (University of Utah) and Prof. Hannah Horowitz (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) to discuss atmospheric oxidation enhancement and what research is needed to investigate if there may be a pathway to safe and acceptable use for these methods. Register here: https://lnkd.in/grTAn4hR Atmospheric oxidation enhancement (AOE) has been proposed as a pathway to remove excess atmospheric methane, but it is challenging to assess scenarios where these strategies could be effective and safe. What approaches might be worth considering? How can we improve the models used to evaluate them? Prof. Haskins is the co-author of a recent paper highlighting potential air quality side-effects of emitting hydrogen peroxide to enhance methane oxidation (https://lnkd.in/g7-uBwAc), and Prof. Horowitz is the author of an analysis of several AOE approaches (https://lnkd.in/gfEuNRdP) commissioned by the National Academies committee that prepared a Research Agenda Toward Atmospheric Methane Removal (https://lnkd.in/eQJhCn-V?). Register for the webinar (March 11, at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM GMT) ?and sign up for Spark's mailing list to get updates on future webinars: https://lnkd.in/grTAn4hR

On this episode of The Climate Biotech Podcast, Sam Abernethy of Spark Climate Solutions and Paul Reginato of Homeworld Collective dive into the science and innovation behind atmospheric methane removal. They explore how methanotrophs—nature’s own methane-eating microbes—could help lower emissions, alongside breakthroughs in bioreactors and engineered plants. They also discuss the challenges of scaling these solutions, from enzyme engineering to accurate methane measurement. Tune in to learn how biotech is shaping the future of methane mitigation and climate resilience. ?? Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/gSSwd9Pz ?? Spotify:? https://lnkd.in/g34Q3yQ4

Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking at IFC - International Finance Corporation & University of Chicago’s Innovation Commission for Climate Change, Food Security, and Agriculture, and the Market Shaping Accelerator's ‘Catalyzing Innovation: Scaling Solutions for Climate and Agriculture’ event. Invariably, I get asked what the largest barriers are to adopting enteric methane mitigating technologies in emerging economies - The largest piece of the emissions pie. And my answer remains - The largest barrier to adoption is having something to adopt. Our market signals are not drawing innovation toward our greatest challenges. I have been truly impressed working with the University of Chicago Market Shaping Accelerator on developing an advanced market commitment for enteric methane technologies. This type of market mechanism could be a game changer for livestock sustainability around the world. ???Last year was the hottest on record, and scientists are clear that the world is on track to exceed 1.5°C of global warming. Methane, which traps heat much more effectively than CO2, is a significant part of this problem. ??Methane concentration in the atmosphere has accelerated rapidly since the early 1900s, driven both by human-caused methane emissions and increased methane emissions from natural sources due to human-induced climate change. ??That’s why researchers are exploring atmospheric methane removal as a potential option to reduce warming. Our newest article gathers 5 key things to know: https://go.wri.org/7cMcsb #emissions #GHG #greenhousegases #climatechange #globalwarming #methane #extremeheat #climatetechnology #methaneremoval #removal
