Today, my beloved Los Angeles Dodgers are one game away from winning the 2024 World Series. For those who know me, my love for this game and team runs deep. But more than just a game, baseball holds profound lessons on grit, teamwork, and perseverance that I find echoing into life and business every day. While some may see this Dodgers vs. Yankees matchup as a clash between two "big-spending" franchises, I see two teams that have earned their place on baseball’s biggest stage. To me, the payrolls and stats take a back seat to the real test: watching these teams perform under intense pressure, when they’re tired, hurt, and facing adversity. The World Series isn’t just a culmination of skill—it’s a measure of resilience, grit, and execution. Both teams have experienced record-breaking highs and serious setbacks this season, showing that no success comes without a fair share of struggle. Watching the Dodgers hold a 3-0 lead, on the cusp of bringing the title home, reminds me of a critical truth: in any high-stakes game, whether in sports or business, victory belongs to those who show up ready to adjust, push through hardship, and never lose sight of the goal. As we pursue excellence in our own fields, may we embody the same resilience, determination, and focus that these teams bring to the field. Leadership, like baseball, is about assembling the best team, weathering the tough innings, and finding the will to win—even when the odds seem stacked. Here’s to all of us finding our own path to the championship, in life and in work. Go Dodgers! #SparkDodgersBlue #WorldSeries #SparkBlueMarketing #GoDodgers

Leaders and decision influencers: Our people are connected to what is really happening.?They are not blinded by what we wish it was. This means our people are directly attached to what clients are feeling, what other employees’ sentiments are, what the marketplace thinks of our product and brand, and of course they have thoughts on their own experiences.?Steve Jobs famously said, “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” If we have an organization where our clients and people are not encouraged to tell us the truth (even when inconvenient), we arrive in a dangerous place where we are making and influencing important decisions based on hope and vacuum-based emotions.?This doesn’t mean we should not trust our instincts, we absolutely should; it simply means we must create an environment where our people and clients have access to be a part of the conversation. As a small start-up, I am building the muscle of consistently asking meaningful questions of our people and clients - and using their on-the-ground impressions to adjust.?This habit will serve us well as our business grows and it becomes tougher to undo poor decisions and pivot on company culture. Here are a few steps that will help: 1. Hire people with a specific set of qualitative and quantitative characteristics that serve our clients and business well –then trust them. *Pro tip, establish these characteristics first, by role – and develop questions to screen for them.? 2. Be creative and have fun with different ways to receive feedback from our people and clients.?At the very least, keep it simple and just ask questions.?*Pro tip, view this feedback as a gift and an instinct guide.? 3. Act on the feedback we receive.?This shows our people and clients that their input is valued and we’re all in it together as a team.?*Pro tip, use or develop a decision-making framework and have the courage to say no when it makes sense.
