Out now, Prometheus Vol. 7: In Between: Architecture and the Development of the Urban Landscape. Vol. 7 was designed by Span’s Bud Rodecker, Alyssa Arnesen, and Alec Hudson. The cover photo was courtesy of Alejandro Salda?a Perales, Ph.D., and the collage was designed by Alec Hudson at Span in response to the volume’s title: In Between: Architecture and the Development of the Urban Landscape. “In Between is introduced as a concept exploring architecture’s performance alongside a multiplicity of disciplines shaping the present-day urban landscapes. It aims to argue the critical role architects have in shaping our cities. It expects to highlight the key areas of interest for architecture in an increasingly complex environment and frames its responses in meeting new challenges. Finally, “In Between,” targets sharing the achievements and opportunities of contemporary urban development models.” — The Editors of Prometheus, Vol. 7(Alejandro Salda?a Perales, Ph.D., Aamena Mubarak Bakarmom, ?i?ek Karata?, Sasha Zanko) Now in its 7th volume, Span’s system for Prometheus is designed to accommodate content from many different sources with a wide range of heavily cited imagery. The facade of Crown Hall directly inspires Prometheus’s underlying proportion and grid structure. Prometheus is a peer-reviewed journal that presents research-in-progress developed by IIT College of Architecture Ph.D. program candidates. 关于我们
Span is a studio crossing the boundaries of communication design in all mediums. Our work is focused on challenging expectations with wit, logic, and a playful spirit. Blending typographic discipline with fearless expression, we elevate the role of the visual message in both culture and community. Span takes the long view — in every gesture and every project. We see our design practice as a research and development lab both for our clients’ needs and for our own inquiry. We strive to discover innovative ways to increase impact in the art of communication through imagination and experimentation. We experiment with new models for sustainability that weave together equality, inclusiveness, and environmentalism as an ethos for success in both our work and our studio. Span has been featured by the international media including Wired Magazine, The Economist, Smithsonian Magazine, US News and World Report, and the Associated Press. The studio has also received recognition from the design profession in Communication Arts, Brand New, the Society of Typographic Arts, and the Type Directors Club among others.

It was an honor to have collaborated with Cecilia Cuff as she founded Chicago’s new public park,?South Side Sanctuary. At Span we worked with the Sanctuary team to craft a dynamic visual identity that captures the essence and energy of the park. The identity reflects the form, expression, and movement in South Side Sanctuary’s intentionally inclusive architecture and the diverse activities of its visitors. Turning dreams into reality. At Span, this is the work we do. We work with visionary leaders and use design to transform dreams into a reality that we all get to live within. Welcome to Chicago’s newest public park — South Side Sanctuary in Bronzeville. It was an honored to have my team at Span selected by founder Cecilia Cuff to be part of her team that transformed a vacant lot into a vibrant public park to unite and uplift community members of all ages. See the case study here: https://lnkd.in/eK8NEze7 At Span, we were entrusted with creating a visual identity. What we designed reflects the essence and energy of this unique space. South Side Sanctuary is more than just a park. It’s a community hub designed for everyone. Form Follows Function Our design embodies the park’s inclusive architecture, with a logotype that features custom typography that we drew inspired by the geometry of Future Firm's?architecture and site plan that provides a shortcut diagonal pathway for commuters take to the Green Line station. A Beacon of Versatility The logotype is crafted to be adaptable for both vertical and horizontal orientations allowing the design of a sculptural beacon sign. The bespoke stencil letterforms pay homage to Chicago artist Apache Wakefield’s Bronzeville bench, while the uppercase letters with descenders underscore the park unique topography. This logo can easily be described as non-normative, which is important as there has never been a park like this before. Relational Color is Color with a Purpose Our eclectic color palette draws from the park's surroundings—purple and green from the native plants, pink and teal from nearby businesses, and a bronze tone inspired by the Bronzeville’s historic statues. POP! (Public Outdoor Plaza) South Side Sanctuary was realized through the Public Outdoor Plaza (POP!) program, part of Mayor Johnson’s initiative to invest in Chicago’s neighborhoods. This plaza empower the community to reclaim spaces for recreation, performances, and activities that bring people together. Build in Communities to Build Communities South Side Sanctuary has already generated employment for over 35 individuals and offered internships and vocational training in the areas of architecture and construction. Recently at the studio, we were asked to help rebrand SOS Children's Villages Illinois, a charitable organization dedicated to building the future of foster care by keeping families of siblings together in one household. We positioned them with a new name — One Family Illinois — to ”better represent the organization’s commitment to unity, inclusivity, and comprehensive support for children, youth and families.” With a new name came a new visual identity that emphasized both the siblings and the housing communities that One Family Illinois provides. A bold and wide-reaching color palette celebrates their diversity and inclusivity, expressed through a secondary pattern that is used to activate different materials. The typography is modern yet playful, a nod to the organization’s strong relationship with the Chicago architectural community including Studio Gang Architects and Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA). In addition to the identity, Span created a detailed communication suite of stationery and social media assets to outfit them for the announcement of the rebrand. For over 30 years, Skyline Design has been setting industry standards by pairing a passion for glass fabrication with an unwavering commitment to design. As partners with leading architects, artists, and designers, Skyline redefines patterned glass in architecture through collaborations that enhance color, luminosity, movement, and privacy. Skyline’s small team of experts is obsessed with the art, science, and craft of transforming glass. They create glass for the widest range of applications while continuously refining quality control, cost, and time efficiencies. Privately owned and operated in Chicago since 1983. At Span we redesigned Skyline’s entire graphic identity system, creating a new logo and comprehensive branding guidelines. The new logo is a bold, simple wordmark that avoids competing with Skyline’s products and partners, while still allowing for versatility and transformation in its applications. The new identity celebrates Skyline as a "Dynamic Toolkit for Design" empowering architects and designers with maximum creative flexibility. It highlights the Skyline brand pillars of partnering with creators, practical problem-solving, environmental responsibility, and helping people succeed. The system provides clear guidelines and inspires possibilities. The Chicago Architecture Center celebrates Chicago's unique architecture and urban design with exhibitions, tours, and educational programs. As a leading cultural institution, their exhibitions aim to engage the public in important issues shaping the built environment. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns examines the challenges and opportunities facing urban cores like Chicago's Loop in the post-pandemic era. Organized around the themes of residing, renewing, reconnecting, and rewilding downtowns, the show featured case studies, architectural follies, and interactive elements designed to spark dialogue. At Span, we collaborated closely with the CAC and exhibition designers Could Be Architecture (Could Be Design LLC) to create a cohesive graphic identity. We developed all printed exhibition graphics including interpretive panels, infographics, environmental graphics and a bold typographic approach pairing the Art Deco-inspired Bifur font with the modern geometric Futura-based The Future. The exhibition's branded graphics helped tie together diverse content while the distinct typographic treatment gave it a strong, recognizable presence. Thoughtful design amplified the show's key themes and created an engaging, participatory experience inviting visitors to envision the future of urban centers.
