It takes one person to make a change, challenge the way we make decisions, to ultimately get to the part where we start doing the work and stop talking about it. U.S. Cyber Command, National Security Agency, Cyber National Mission Force, National Security Council, The White House, all organizations shaping the direction of the Spades Institute. It was just amazing to be able to bring #spades into the light with these agencies this week. ?? What else was amazing, running into some friends from Microsoft in the hallways at The White House. After some quick exchanges of the amazing things Brad Smith and his team were working on and a few awesome initiatives from Justin Spelhaug, we shared the brief mission behind #spades with Ginny Badanes and Mark Ghazai. We then went to our opposite ends of the hallway and went off to #impact the world, so we could ‘do more good.’ ?? But we had to get a quick picture first. ?? I love when worlds collide! Why I founded Spades Institute. I sat in a room next to Tim Kosiba at Vanderbilt University. I looked over at him and said, "Tim, you know what would be amazing ... if we had a community of people that just simply cared about doing the right thing..." Tim without skipping a beat said, "...put it together and I'm there." Two days later, Lili Davoudian and I sat in a room with President Bush and the entire #leadership team at the George W. Bush Presidential Center Forum on Leadership watching and listening to life changing stories of impact. As Indra Nooyi completed her remarks, Lili challenged me and simply implied "why not, why not be the change" (I'm paraphrasing a little). It was in that moment, and that week, which I realized what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to build a community of trusted individuals who weren't afraid to engage in any environment, humans that could always accept failure for the opportunity of growth, people who would challenge popular opinions with emotion and heart. I wanted to find a way to empower and enable this same community to engage in matters that would truly build a better future for all of us. A place that both #industry & #government could work together and exchange ideas and opinions, and not purchase orders and invoices. Create a #Platform that this community could use, so they could make a difference without fear of repercussion. I'm beyond excited to share that #SpadesInstitute as of this morning has officially been recognized as a #501c3 and can truly begin to focus on its mission; An Institution formed and built to empower individuals, organizations and communities to instill a lasting dedication to #democracy, #freedom, and #ethics. I wanted to find and create something special, and the truth is that alone I was never going to be able to achieve that. But with Lili Davoudian and Tim Kosiba, #WE found a way to make #Spades happen. As an organizational update, our #Spades Council has begun to form and our members have begun engaging within academia, industry and government.
