  • This is what systemic discrimination can look like in the workplace for people who stutter. It doesn't always come from a malicious place, but the impact is still felt. Kudos to Tommy for sharing his story ??

    Risk Management at EY

Hi everyone! This is my first post on LinkedIn after being quiet on here for years. I wanted to share a personal story that will hopefully shine some light on what people who stutter deal with in the professional workplace. Most of my colleagues and friends do not know that I stutter. Only a few co-workers that I work regularly with, close friends, and family know this. Now, I’m very open about being a PWS (person who stutters) and enjoy sharing this with new people I meet, especially in the workplace to avoid confusion. Before I started my current contractor position at EY, I was in graduate school looking to start my career. Towards the end of business school, it was time to start applying to positions I was interested in to gain relevant experience. One of these interviews was at a large financial institution. After a few rounds of interviews with different people, I thought everything went well. Towards the final round interview stage, I was let known that I have not been selected. As this is common for students to be rejected, firms try to seek the highest qualified candidates, so I was not upset at all. I asked for feedback on what I can do in the future to improve on, as I’m always willing to learn. As I received the feedback I found it interesting that the interviewer decided that me having a stutter was the issue and not my lack of experience. I could say I was shocked, but if I did, I would be lying. As I have previously been declined job opportunities in NYC specifically due to my stutter. The situation regarding this post happened two years ago. I decided to write this because I shared this with a few people and they did not believe me that an employer would tell me this, especially in writing. Based on the feedback given to me: “it would be best to look for roles that don’t have much of a verbal communication component”, this would mean to essentially not find a position where I would have to talk. I believe this person meant no harm, but it is harmful for the 1% of people around the world who stutter. We have to eliminate the stigma that people who stutter are not intelligent or whatever negative stereotypes are included. I have met CEO’s, c-suite executives, partners, and many other successful people who stutter. Please share this with anyone you would like to spread the world about educating people on stuttering. Thank you to the National Stuttering Association for being a valuable organization to people who stutter. Please continue to educate the world on stuttering and provide a safe space for people going through life with a stutter. This is not an attempt to target any firm or any employer who turned me down simply because of my stutter. I have not and will not mention these companies publicly. I wanted to show the world that many people out there are unaware of stuttering and there is still a stigma regarding people who stutter in the workplace. Employers out there, give people who stutter a chance. #westutter

  • Have you watched our new advocacy video yet??? "The SPACE Between My Words" is a beautiful exploration of individuality, listening and stuttering. It features 3 SPACE community members and their incredible, authentic voices. Too often, stuttered voices are erased from the narrative. At SPACE, we work not just to include the voices of people who stutter, but to actively amplify them. Whether you stutter or not, this film will change the way you think about communication and listening. Visit our website to help us create more SPACE for stuttering: spacetostutter.org/donate
