Space Heritage ????: On this day three years ago, SpOC Guardians played a role in the world's first planetary defense test mission. NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission launched on Nov. 23, 2021, aimed to verify if a kinetic impact could redirect an asteroid's path. Our Guardians supported the mission by using space surveillance assets to track and monitor orbital debris, ensuring flight safety and providing route clearance to the asteroid. On Sept. 26, 2022, the DART spacecraft made a direct hit on the target asteroid—which was traveling roughly 15,000 mph nearly 6.7 million miles from Earth—and shortened its orbit by an astonishing 32 minutes! ?? This historic mission confirmed that NASA can successfully navigate a spacecraft to intentionally collide with an asteroid and kinetically deflect its orbital trajectory. ONE GUARDIAN | Specialist 3 Judah Falcon serves as a vehicle systems operator for the Global Positioning System constellation with newly designated Mission Delta 31, 2nd Navigation Warfare Squadron, located at Schriever SFB, Colo. Hailing from Ridgefield, Wash., Falcon enlisted in the U.S. Space Force Aug. 29, 2022, as a VSO and is responsible for the health and safety of the GPS constellation, delivering the world’s gold standard for positioning, navigation, and timing data to military and civilian users globally. So, we are proud to announce that the first class of Guardians from the Orbital Engagement Qualification Course graduated in a ceremony on Nov. 14. The Orbital Engagement Qualification Course is a new, groundbreaking orbital warfare training program that prepares graduates to integrate joint functions in support of Delta 9 to protect and defend operations. The intensive course curriculum includes hundreds of hours of classroom instruction, on the job training, high-fidelity training simulations, and eight multi-week exercises. So, join us in celebrating the initial cadre of graduates who have completed all qualification and certification requirements. Josiah Wattenbarger gave a Space Force mission brief to the Cape Code Rotary Club—a global network of 1.4 million business and professional leaders dedicated to making a positive difference in our local, national, and international communities through service. The 8th Combat Training Squadron hosted 10 Sailors from the US Navy's Submarine Forces Atlantic (SUBFORLANT). The Submariners visited multiple Space and Mission Deltas at Schriever and Buckley Space Force Base, Colo. gaining better understanding of SpOC's role in joint warfare.
