After arriving at South Shore Hospital due to the progression of her diabetes and chronic kidney disease, Gigi initially thought she had two choices: go to a nursing facility to receive dialysis or go home on comfort measures. Then Joshua Hundert, MD, Chief of Nephrology, suggested a third option – home hemodialysis, which changed Gigi's life. "I can see the progress I’ve made, and I want to work harder and keep the ball rolling," Gigi said. "That’s what home dialysis has done for me.” Offered by Fresenius Medical Care, Gigi has multiple four-hour dialysis treatments at home each week, with assistance from her husband, Bill. “I’m floored by how well she has done," Hundert said. Earlier this month, we gratefully received a generous donation from Kids Who Care: this kind and thoughtful group donated 55 emergency care duffel bags to South Shore Hospital's Joseph & Mildred Finnell Family Pediatric Unit! Each bag was filled with cozy blankets, art supplies, and other fun items to help put smiles on the faces of our pediatric patients. The donation was dropped off by Kids Who Care student leaders Aidan Mahmood, Ethan Mahmood, and Elyza Light. As part of the donation, these outstanding kids shared the Kids Who Care mission statement and collateral with our Pediatrics Unit Team. We're grateful to Aidan, Ethan, Elyza, and the Kids Who Care Team for thinking of our young patients! We also send a special "thank you" to Stacey Mahmood, daughter of South Shore Health Senior Medical Staff Coordinator Carolyn Heman, for inspiring young people to get involved in community service! “Caring for patients when they’re acutely ill in the hospital is a privilege. Patients and their families are vulnerable when they’re sick. There can be so many unknowns – it can be scary.” “Supporting patients and their families during those critical times is really rewarding. Being able to help and feel like you’re making a difference in these critical times for people in our own community is what keeps me coming back.” Kelsey Dovell, CNP, MSN began her time at South Shore Health as a nurse on Pratt 4 before transitioning to our Emergency Department. While continuing to work full-time as a nurse, Kelsey completed a nurse practitioner program, including clinical rotations at the Hospital. Today, she works as a hospitalist nurse practitioner, caring for those admitted to our inpatient floors. We have a terrific group of NPs who provide outstanding care for patients across South Shore Health, including at South Shore Hospital, South Shore Medical Center, The Women’s Center of South Shore Medical Center, Health Express, the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center at South Shore Health, and our ambulatory sites. Our NPs care for patients on our inpatient floors, serve as primary care providers, and more. This year’s NP Week theme is NPs: At the Heart of Healthcare. Our NPs embody this theme on a daily basis, bringing kindness, compassion, and expertise to every patient interaction. This week (Nov. 10-16) is Perioperative Nurses Week! We honor our dedicated perioperative nurses and nursing assistants for their incredible work, both in the operating rooms at South Shore Hospital and at the Ambulatory Surgery Center at 2 Pond Park in Hingham. This team meticulously prepares surgical rooms, ensures all equipment is ready and sterile, and maintains a safe environment to protect each patient. Our perioperative nurses and nursing assistants guide patients and families through preoperative steps, provide expert care and monitoring during procedures, and offer essential support as patients transition to recovery. Their focus, skill, and compassion help make every procedure smoother and safer. Thank you for all of your hard work! On Tuesday, The Boston Globe published an editorial spotlighting our innovative model of using an alternative transportation method to help patients get the behavioral health services they need. In place of an ambulance, the South Shore Health EMS team uses a specially outfitted SUV, staffed by EMTs, to safely and comfortably transport behavioral health patients. This prevents an ambulance from being tied up on what can be lengthy journeys, improving patient flow across South Shore Health. “It’s comfortable,” William Tollefsen, MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine, told the Globe. “It’s a dignified way of transporting someone as opposed to tying them down on an ambulance stretcher.” So far this year, we have transported more than 750 patients to facilities across the state using this model. I strive to understand each patient's unique needs, preferences, and circumstances, and prioritize shared decision-making.” Liana MacDonald, WHNP-BC is an OB/GYN provider at The Women’s Center of South Shore Medical Center. She practices at The Women’s Center’s Quincy, Weymouth, and Whitman offices and is currently welcoming new patients. November 3-9 is National Patient Transport Week, a time to celebrate our wonderful team! Our Patient Transport colleagues play an important role in patient care and experience at South Shore Hospital. This team helps maintain patient flow by safely and efficiently moving patients through the Hospital. In addition to patients, this team also transports lab specimens, medical equipment, blood products, and more. This team is flexible, responsive, and committed to doing their best to support both patients and colleagues. Over the past year, our Patient Transport Team completed more than 302,000 transports, averaging 832 transports per day! We appreciate all that they do. Happy Transport Week!
