We are pleased to share that Dr. Richard A. Esposito, Southern Company Program Manager, Geosciences and Carbon Management, recently spoke at The University of Georgia's Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Summit. Dr. Esposito, a leading expert in geological carbon sequestration, shared insights into the National Carbon Capture Center’s work and explored CCS deployment opportunities in the Southeast. ? The summit brought together leaders from industry, academia and government to discuss the critical role of carbon capture in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable energy solutions. The event featured talks, panel discussions and networking opportunities to exchange ideas on CCS innovations, best practices and policies. ? Thank you to The University of Georgia's Department of Geology, Southern States Energy Board, Georgia Power Company and Southern Company for sponsoring this impactful event. Together, we are making strides toward a net-zero future. ? #CarbonCapture #Sustainability #CCS #Decarbonization

Ben Wernette, Ph.D., delivered the keynote address at The University of Georgia's Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Summit?yesterday, highlighting the Board's carbon management project portfolio and providing his thoughts on the future of carbon capture technology (meeting participants pictured below)! ? Presented by the University's Department of Geology, SSEB, and our friends at Georgia Power Company and Southern Company, the two-day event focuses on the critical role of CCS research and innovation in achieving energy independence and advancing environmental stewardship across the nation.

We’ve got our saddles hitched and boots on the ground—we’re charging forward to lead this critical carbon management project in Texas. SSEB is proud to help pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future!
?? BIG NEWS ?? #FECM announced $6 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for a project that will study pipeline transport of captured CO2 from onshore industrial and power generation facilities to offshore secure geologic storage in Texas state waters. ?? Additionally, DOE announced it will make up to $48 million available to support additional CO2 transport networks that connect sources of CO2 to locations for geologic storage or conversion via pipelines, rail, trucks, barges, or ships—or any combination of transport modes. ?? This effort will significantly reduce CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere, help deliver a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 and advance a clean and secure energy future. ?? https://lnkd.in/gniPvbbe #JustAnnounced

The National Carbon Capture Center, in collaboration with the National Energy Technology Laboratory, Southern States Energy Board and Aircapture, has successfully completed the first field test of a direct air capture (DAC) system at our facility in Wilsonville, Alabama. This groundbreaking test, which concluded in July, marks a major step forward in lowering DAC costs and reducing atmospheric CO2 levels The DAC system tested uses a solid amine sorbent-based adsorption-desorption?technology capable of producing a CO2 stream of 95% purity, suitable for sequestration and industrial applications. With over 3,300 hours of testing and 137,000 cycles, the project team achieved an impressive 94% operational uptime, demonstrating the system's robustness in real-world conditions. This milestone is crucial for advancing carbon management technologies and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Special thanks to our partners at #NETL, SSEB and Aircapture for their invaluable contributions. Read the full article ? https://lnkd.in/eCiuBDsX #DirectAirCapture #DAC #CarbonRemoval #CarbonCapture

SSEB's own Ben Wernette, Ph.D. presented for the broader SECARB-USA team at the 17th annual Greenhouse Gas Control Technology Conference (GHGT-17) last Monday. His talk focused on using text analytics and large language models to examine public sentiment toward carbon capture and sequestration and identify messaging priorities. The technical execution of this work is being led by?Tom Sabo, Kusuma Lanka, and Sai Suresh Marreddy under the supervision of Goutam Chakraborty, Prem Bikkina, Chris Burns, and Ben Wernette, Ph.D. Stay tuned for their forthcoming publication! Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Southern States Energy Board's 64th Annual Meeting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside Alberta’s Senior Representative to the United States James Rajotte. The SSEB is an interstate compact made up of Governors and State Legislators from 16 southern states and two territories, that like Alberta are working together to advance energy policies and technologies that enhance the region's energy efficiency, affordability, and reliability, as well as promote responsible resource development and innovation. Highlights of the event included an insightful Energy Caucus, hosted by the Honourable Governor's Bill Lee (Tennessee), Office of Governor Jeff Landry (Louisiana), Henry McMaster (South Carolina), and Jim Pillen (Nebraska); meeting Congressman Chuck Fleischmann (TN, 3rd); and Secretary Ken McQueen and Jason Lanclos' session on State Energy Policies, Programs, and Financial Incentives. A special thanks to Ken Nemeth, Kimberly Sams Gray, Kenneth Wagner, Jennifer Jura, John Eick, Daniel Lapato. I look forward to the next years meeting in Alabama.
