The Southern University and A&M College System is the only historically black university system in the United States. The system is comprised of five campuses- Southern University at Baton Rouge, Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University at Shreveport, Southern University Law Center, and Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Southern University is a comprehensive institution offering two-year, four-year, graduate, professional, and doctorate degree programs, fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).

Today, the Office of Governor Jeff Landry announced District Attorney Tony Clayton will be the new chair of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors effective January 1, 2025. ? Clayton, district attorney for the 18th Judicial District (parishes of Iberville, West Baton Rouge & Pointe Coupee), is a 1988 graduate of Southern University and A&M College- Baton Rouge and a 1991 cum laude graduate of Southern University Law Center. He has served as both chairman and vice chairman of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors, and is a managing partner in the Port Allen law firm of Clayton, Fruge’, Ward and Hendry.
