More fantastic progress being made by our E&P business partner, Octavius Infrastructure who are delivering our DC switchgear package in Wessex. The team are installing seven new modules across the route to provide power to the conductor rail to operate electrified passenger services. Today’s National Apprenticeship Week theme is #CelebrationFriday, and in our first post of the day we wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate some of our apprentices past and present. From diverse backgrounds and levels of experience, our apprentices have already helped the SRE by bringing new skills and insights and supported us in making a difference within our local communities. Today’s #NationalApprenticeshipWeek theme is #TLevelThursday T Levels are two-year technical courses that combine classroom learning with industry placements to prepare students for the workplace. Officially launched in 2020, students now have several construction and engineering-based T-Level courses to choose from. As part of the SRE’s skills, employment and education commitment, our Social Value team is partnering with colleges such as Bexhill College in Sussex, Catch22 College in Kent and Newham in London to support T Level support students in their studies, showcase the exciting opportunities that exist within the rail industry and help to grow our pipeline of talent for the workforce of the future. And what better way to discover the workforce of the future than offering T Level industry placements on SRE? Well, we can confirm that in April of this year we will be hosting our first T Level placement student, with the intention of welcoming many more in the coming academic years. At SRE, we see T Level industry placement students as our apprentices of tomorrow. Offering students a T Level placement on SRE will provide a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience on a major infrastructure scheme with a hugely diverse portfolio of works and a wealth of knowledge to tap into, all whilst completing their studies at college. Today’s #NationalApprenticeshipWeek theme is #ApprenticeWednesday and we're handing over Social Value Apprentice, Theodore Carter to share what a typical day looks like for him… My name is Theodore and I’m a 26-year-old, born and raised in London. I currently work as a Social Value Apprentice on Southern Renewals Enterprise, studying to become Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability (CR&S) Practitioner. I come from a mixed Caribbean and Jamaican heritage and grew up in a Christian/Catholic household, surrounded by a diverse community of various ethnic and religious backgrounds. At the age of 22, after six months of in-depth research and questioning, I converted to Islam—a faith I have now been practising for four years. My faith is a fundamental part of my daily routine and one thing I truly appreciate about my workplace is the support I receive from my colleagues and the dedicated prayer space, complete with an ablution area in our office. In the past I have often needed to use standard bathrooms for ablution, sometimes drawing confused looks. Now, I can practise my faith in peace without any awkwardness, which is a small but meaningful adjustment that makes a huge difference. What drives me is being a benefit to society, providing service, and striving to develop good character and conduct in all my interactions. I believe that positivity and meaningful impact come from treating people with respect. - 4:30 AM - Rise and shine! I start my day early to exercise and perform Tahajjud (voluntary prayers before the obligatory Fajr prayer). Sometimes, I go for a run or read before starting my weight exercises. After eating and showering, I head to the mosque for Fajr prayer. - 9:00 AM – I arrive at the workplace, grab a coffee and catch up with my mentor to discuss the day’s tasks. - 9:30 AM - Check and organise the Social Value inbox, responding to emails from colleagues, stakeholders partners organisations such as charities and schools we’re working with. - 10:00 AM- Broadcast announcements about social value activities ?and update data and evidence for social value activities in Thrive, a piece of software we use to measure the social impact we’re making across the Southern region. - 12:00 PM - Lunch break! I enjoy a meal with fellow colleagues and use the prayer room to dhuhr prayer. - 1:00 PM - Work on my CR&S apprenticeship?and engage with different departments to develop strategies for long-lasting, positive social impacts. 2:00 PM- Asr prayer. 3:00 PM - Collaborate with the communications team to keep the social value section of our intranet up to date, create articles, graphics and publications to support our social value initiatives. 4:30 PM - Wrap up and maghrib prayer. I review my progress, set goals for the next day, and reflect on what I’ve learned. 5:00 PM - Head home. I spend the evening relaxing, maybe catching up on some reading or a hobby. 6:00 PM – End the day with isha’a prayer #NAW2025 #SkillsForLife
