The School of Polymer Science and Engineering (SPSE) is home to ~90 undergraduate and ~70 graduate students; it offers polymer science and engineering degrees at the B.S. (ABET accredited), M.S., and Ph.D. levels. Our internationally recognized faculty lead active research programs in sustainable polymers, composites, biomaterials and bioinspired polymers, materials for energy, optoelectronics, and coatings and thin films with external funding totaling ~$50M over the past five years. SPSE offers state-of-the-art facilities for polymer-related research. Core Strength: Polymer synthesis and macromolecular design using a “molecules to materials” approach. Graduates from our programs are equipped with a unique ability to develop structure-property-performance relationships at multiple length scales. Southern Miss is partnering with six other institutions on a $2.5 million project to advance biomaterial research, education, and workforce development in Mississippi. Dr. Tristan Clemons, from the USM School of Polymer Science and Engineering, will lead our efforts to develop polymers and materials for testing. This research aims to create innovative materials for immune system-related diseases and injuries, enhancing healthcare and driving economic growth across Mississippi.

Congratulations to our Southern Miss School of Polymer Science and Engineering Senior Engineering Design Teams on their completion of their final presentations at the 2024 SPSE Engineering Design Showcase! Your hard work throughout the semester was clearly evident today! A special thanks to the faculty, staff, and graduate students that served as team mentors, collaborators, judges, and an audience throughout the semester. Several of these design projects were multidisciplinary: so a shout out to Nina Mclain-Calkins with the USM School of Leadership and Advanced Nursing Practice, Debra Mullins with the USM Children's Center, and Lorraine Stuart with USM Library Special Collections for providing problems for our engineers to solve!
