During SMU's family weekend, the Friends of SMU Libraries hosted the annual Friends, Families, and First Years event on the Boulevard in front of Fondren Library on the Laura Bush Promenade. This year, the SMU English department joined the fun and distributed popcorn and bags to guests. The event offered an abundance of refreshments, giveaways, and shade for guests to relish before heading to Ford Stadium to witness the first ACC win against Florida State. Friends’ members and first year families were invited, but all were welcome. Be the first to know about Libraries’ events by joining Friends of SMU Libraries and enjoy exclusive invitations, borrowing privileges and more. https://lnkd.in/gsw_gWPq #SMU #Dallas #Library #Friends

One of our talented University Honors Program students had an enriching summer filled with cultural exploration, groundbreaking research, and mentoring new Mustangs through the Connect Mentorship Program. We're proud to see our students embracing such diverse opportunities and contributing to the SMU community. We hope to continue supporting SMU's extraordinary honors students!
I’m happy to say I had an eventful and engaging summer! Although I didn’t have an internship, I enjoyed all the opportunities that came my way! From May to early June, I traveled to Rome, Italy and Paris, France for a study abroad trip with 19 other students! While there, we took two history classes to learn more about the culture and history of the prominent capital cities! We got to see many well known monuments, try lots of different food, and explore the cities in our free time. While I was not in Paris during for the Olympics, I got to go up the Eiffel Tower and see an amazing view of the city! In Rome, we went to many historical locations like the Coleseum, the Vatican and all the other churches with amazing art which was my favorite part! Right after study abroad, I flew back to Dallas and came back to SMU to do research as part of the SMU Lyle School of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. My research project was focused on building generative AI applications based on your own data and learning how to evaluate the output of LLMs with numerical metrics to track their improvement over time after changes have been made. We also had weekly workshops where we learned about engineering leadership, research methods, and resume development. I can’t wait to present and share my findings during Family Weekend at the end of September! Last but not least, I got to move in early and participate in the Connect Institute as a mentor in the Connect Metorship Program. Through Connect, I was able to meet many new incoming students and give back to the SMU Community by helping the next set of incoming students. Overall, I’m grateful for all the experiences I had over the past 3 months and am excited for the coming semester and school year!

A story that I had fought for and worked on for the past academic year about Tamerlyn Holmes, affectionately known to SMU Students as Mama T, is officially up on The Daily Campus site! Holmes is the Lead Cashier in The Umphrey Lee Dining Hall and is very popular for her positivity and love shown towards students. Her life turned upside down in 2023 after her mother passed, and her relationship with her longtime boyfriend ended in the same week. Yet, she has continued to be the welcoming face that has served the SMU community for almost two decades. Read below to learn more about Holmes and her story! https://lnkd.in/de3uBcgp

As the month ends, let's reflect and celebrate the important role that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) have played in our shared history.
Over 300 AAPI women professionals and allies were on campus yesterday for the Orchid Giving Circle POWER Leadership Forum. The event, sponsored by SMU Cox, focused on topics like the Power of Allyship, Advocates, Partners and Business+Philanthropy. The Forum raised over $300,000 through generous contributions from 40+ corporations to benefit nonprofit organizations serving the North Texas AAPI Community. Orchid Giving Circle member and SMU Cox Executive Education Managing Director of Corporate Engagement & Strategic Partnerships, Lisa Tran and Associate Dean of Executive Education and Graduate Programs, Professor Shane Goodwin, PhD served as panelists at the event. Back in April, over 250 SMU students, faculty, staff members, and North Texas residents participated in a national day of service called The Big Event. Now in its 6th year at SMU, the Big Event encourages individuals to give back to their local community through volunteer work. Participants conducted community service work at one of SMU’s 25 non-profit North Texas-based community partner organizations. Volunteers had the option to work on campus-based volunteer projects or engage in community service work across North Texas, ranging from packing meals to planting gardens. “The Big Event isn’t just about community service; it’s a chance for our students to lend a helping hand, see the impact of their efforts, and serve the North Texas community.” - Julian DiBona, ’24, executive director of the Big Event at SMU
