  • Update on FLHSMV actions re: gender marker amendments to Florida drivers licenses: We know that some folks have received letters from the FLHSMV informing them that their gender marker has been changed back to their sex assigned at birth, and we know that some people are feeling afraid about what this means and how it will impact them. While we don't have all the answers right now, we are here for you, and we are trying to gather information about how the FLHSMV is implementing their cruel and discriminatory new policy so that we can best address it. If you have received a letter and a replacement license from the FLHSMV reverting your gender marker to your sex assigned at birth, please email SLC's Trans Rights Director, Simone Chriss, the following information: ? Which DMV or Tax Collector’s office in Florida you visited when you changed your gender marker on your Florida license or ID; ? The date (or approximate date) of when you amended your gender marker on your license or ID to reflect your gender identity; ? What document/evidence you provided to support the gender marker change (i.e. a letter from your doctor, a U.S. Passport reflecting the correct gender marker, an amended birth certificate, etc.) You can email this information to [email protected]. As the state and federal government continue to target the rights and freedoms of transgender people, SLC will continue to stand up, fight back, and do whatever we can to hold them accountable for their indefensible actions. #ProtectTransLives #ProtectTransKids #TransRights

  • UPDATE: SLC subpoenas documents from Florida Agency For Health Care Administration in lawsuit alleging mismanagement Last September, Southern Legal Counsel—along with Legal Services of Greater Miami and pro bono attorney Nancy Wright—filed a lawsuit in federal court against Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), claiming that that the state’s management of its Medicaid Long Term Care Waiver program violates the U.S. Constitution, the Medicaid Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. AHCA subsequently filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Grant v. Weida. As we wait on the court to issue its ruling on the state’s motion to dismiss, we are pushing ahead. Our litigation team, comprised of Wright, who is lead counsel, SLC attorneys Chelsea Dunn and Jodi Siegel, and our colleagues Jeff Hearne and Jocelyn Armand at Legal Services of Greater Miami, is engaged in the complex discovery process needed to pursue our claims. • NEW DATE ANNOUNCED: Community Town Hall on the Federal Government's Continued Anti-Trans Actions, rescheduled for MARCH 20th 2025 at 6:30pm via Zoom. (Note: If you already registered for the Community Town Hall that was supposed to take place on March 13th, you do not need to re-register for this one!) There are two flyers accompanying this post - the second is specifically for mental health providers (free CE credit is available), and the first is for everyone else! Description: We know many of you have questions about the federal government’s recent anti-trans measures and how they may impact you, your loved ones, and your community. That's why we're holding another COMMUNITY TOWN HALL on Thursday, March 20th at 6:30pm EST on Zoom. (We had more than 300 people register for our last Community Town Hall on February 10, 2025! If you missed the last one, you don’t want to miss out on this one!) We want to make sure every member of the community understands: (a) what the cruel anti-trans federal government actions and Executive Orders mean and how they are being implemented; (b) the status of the legal challenges to these discriminatory measures; and (c) all the ways we can PROTECT our rights, DEFEND our freedoms and dignities, RESIST in the face of oppression, and SUPPORT each other as we navigate this dark and demoralizing time in our country's history. Registration is required (for the safety of the presenter and participants) - simply complete a very quick registration form that is only accessible to SLC attorney Simone Chriss, then you will receive the Zoom link to attend the Community Town Hall by email prior to the event. You can use the QR code on the flyer to register! Remember: Our existence, and our persistence, are acts of resistance. They want us to be confused, overwhelmed, divided and afraid. When we are informed and united, we take away much of their power.
