When a crisis strikes, Southern Company Gas Senior Integrity Analyst Daniel Lee Mayer, GISP is always ready and willing to help – on and off the clock. The 2024 winner of our Luminary Award for exceptional employee volunteers, Daniel maintains the safety and reliability of our natural gas infrastructure by day and volunteers with the Georgia State Defense Force and veterans' organizations in his personal time. Daniel has devoted countless hours to help Georgia families through natural disasters and by organizing supply drives for veterans and their families. #FAMU alum Nikki Herring-Jackson, operations support manager at Southern Company Gas, says that attending Florida A&M University shaped who she is today. “It provided me with a deep understanding of myself, my heritage, and my culture,” Herring-Jackson said. “FAMU, which on the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee, FL, will always embody the strength and resilience of our community, living out the motto of ‘Excellence with Caring.’”

We value our partnership with Tennessee State University College of Engineering to support and mentor students entering the workforce. Our VP of Operations for Chattanooga Gas, Tiffany Callaway Ferrell, discusses Southern Company's pledge to HBCUs and how these funds support students through scholarships, equipment and mentorship. Dr. Catherine Armwood, Director of Development at TSU, and Marleen Metcalf, Director of Customer Operations at Southern Company Gas and TSU alum, share the impact of the partnership between Chattanooga Gas and Tennessee State University on the students. For Engineer's Week, we are excited to return to TSU's campus to participate in career fairs, resume workshops and panel discussions to inform students about their career opportunities.
