Southern Air is incredibly proud to announce that Grayson Warner, one of our talented HVAC apprentices, was awarded an Outstanding Apprenticeship Award for 2024! Registered Apprenticeship Programs play a vital role in building a strong, skilled workforce. We had a spicy situation on our hands. Southern Air’s 2024 Chili Cook-Off turned up the heat, and the results are... well, a little suspicious. ?? Safety Coordinator Randy Crawford (who just so happens to be in charge of the cook off) took home the first place trophy, the giant stainless steel Southern Air chili stirring paddle. Coincidence? We’ll let you decide. Was there a miscount? Did Randy sneak in some extra cayenne pepper? Did he ‘accidentally’ sabotage the competition? Either way, Randy took home the coveted title after last year’s winner, Human Resources Christie Barnes, passed the stirring paddle to him and earned herself a respectable 3rd place this year! She’s still a chili champ in our eyes, and hey, there’s always next year. Building Automation Project Manager Jeff Claytor snagged 2nd place, and both he and Christie walked away with VISA gift cards — because nothing says “great chili” like a little shopping spree! Huge congratulations to our winners! We are deeply honored to share that our late President, Robert “Bob” Clarke, was posthumously inducted into the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance Hall of Fame at its annual gala in November. This prestigious recognition celebrates Bob’s extraordinary contributions to both the business world and the Lynchburg community—an enduring legacy that continues to inspire us all. Throughout his 54-year career at Southern Air, Bob transformed our company into one of Virginia's leading mechanical and electrical contracting firms. His leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence shaped not only Southern Air but also the community he loved so much. Bob's impact went far beyond the workplace. He was a passionate advocate for local organizations, serving as a founding board member of Big Brothers of Central Virginia and as Chairman of the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, among many other leadership roles. His service to our community earned him numerous awards, including the National Conference for Community and Justice Humanitarian Award. We are proud to continue Bob’s work and carry forward the lessons he taught us. His posthumous induction into the Lynchburg Regional Business Hall of Fame is a testament to the lasting impact he made on this region and the values he instilled in Southern Air: integrity, leadership, and a deep commitment to service. Rusty Staples, Plumbing Superintendent, earned Southern Air’s Safety Excellence Award! When faced with the challenge of offloading steel victolic prefab, PVC, and other pipes from awkwardly piled flatbeds, Rusty took action. He designed a steel-framed pipe dolly with removable sides and casters, allowing us to safely lift the entire frame with a lull. This innovative solution not only transports materials where they’re needed but also significantly reduces the risk of items falling off the truck. Rusty’s design keeps our team off the truck, minimizing potential safety hazards and demonstrating his commitment to safety and efficiency. Jeremy Neighbors, Electrical Foreman at BWXT, has won Southern Air’s Safety Excellence Award! Jeremy exemplifies our commitment to safety, seamlessly integrating it with production in challenging environments. Every Wednesday, he leads team meetings focused on both tasks and safety, ensuring everyone is on the same page. He goes above and beyond by personally introducing new team members to the plant layout, helping them feel comfortable and safe. When safety concerns arise, Jeremy is quick to address them, regularly seeking guidance from our safety department. During a recent shut down, he took proactive measures to protect his crew on the roof, providing pop-up canopies and hard hat shades. His unwavering commitment to enforcing PPE and adhering to safety policies sets a fantastic example for all of us.
