The Georgia Forestry Commission’s Timber Damage Assessment reveals that Hurricane Helene impacted 8.9 million acres of forestland, with 1.47 million acres sustaining the majority of timber damage. The storm dealt a $1.28 billion blow to Georgia's timber resources, including over 26 million tons of pine, valued at $729 million, and 30 million tons of hardwood, valued at $556 million. Notably, 88% of the damage was to private forestland. In conjunction with advocacy efforts, GFA visited with timber landowners who found themselves in the path of Hurricane Helene and awoke to devastated forestlands and an uncertain future. Unprecedented weather events can severely impact the future of forestry in Georgia. By ensuring that timber growers are provided with equal and adequate response to natural disasters, we aim to safeguard Georgia’s forests and the communities that depend on them. This uniqueness highlights how timberland valuations, wood procurement strategies, and forest management plans get customized to optimize the market and company assets. Recently, Forisk launched the?Custom Market Forecast?(CMF),?which includes a dashboard-style report and data file with price (cost) forecasts for client-specific timber markets and wood baskets. INDUSTRY NEWS. FROM INTERNATIONAL PAPER - OCT. 31, 2024: International Paper today announced the decision to review strategic options for its global cellulose fibers (GCF) business. The decision to explore alternatives for the GCF business is consistent with the Company’s strategy to focus on sustainable packaging solutions. Additionally, IP announced the permanent closure of its Georgetown, South Carolina mill. The mill will shut down in stages with a full closure expected by the end of 2024. The Georgetown mill produces approximately 300,000 tons of fluff pulp designed for a range of consumer applications. GCF plans to retain 100% of the mill’s fluff pulp capacity by transferring production to other mills and further reducing the Company’s exposure to commodity pulp grades. The mill also produces uncoated freesheet papers that it sells to Sylvamo pursuant to a strategic contract, which IP and Sylvamo have mutually agreed to terminate as of December 31, 2024. In total, 526 hourly employees and 148 salaried employees will be impacted. All employees will be offered severance benefits, outplacement services and access to mental health resources.
