As we wrap up AmeriCorps Week, we're excited to highlight the journey of one of SECC's long-time members turned leaders, Hope. From early days on our crews to becoming a Crew Leader, Hope’s story showcases the transformative power of conservation work and the passion it ignites: “Growing up, I had always loved nature. My family went camping every summer, drove through the nearby national park every weekend, and had picnics for birthdays instead of a party. So I figured a lifelong passion would be a good place to try and find a career. I searched conservation jobs, and SECC was one of the first pages that popped up. My first season, I served on an in-town crew at the Chickamauga National Military Park installing turnpikes on a horse trail, and I loved it so much that I signed up for another season as soon as I could. This time, I went from commuting to starting a hitch schedule, nine days on camping and five days off at home. My crew camped in national forests all over the Southeast as we marked the boundary line between private and public land. Two seasons down and I couldn’t seem to get enough. My third consecutive season as a member was in the summer where we worked mostly on the Bartram Trail, named after a conservationist that explored and documented the flora and fauna of the southern colonies. By this point, I knew I wanted to work to in this field for the rest of my life, so moving up and gaining more experience was my next goal. My fourth season, I became an Assistant Crew Leader and helped teach a crew of new members about trail work, crosscutting, and backpacking for the first time. And finally, I came back as the Crew Leader for my fifth consecutive season and headed the boundary marking crew that I had been a member on the year before. This past year and three months at SECC has truly changed my life. I embraced a new line of work and rekindled a childhood passion. I learned so many new skills and made a lot of connections with amazing people. I discovered that I’m capable of more than I thought, became stronger in body and mind, and realized I still have a lot to learn. I don’t exactly know what’s next for me, but I do know that I will continue to help preserve something that is so dear to my heart. And thanks to SECC, I know I’m ready for whatever that may be.” Hope's dedication and growth inspire all of us to pursue what we love and make a lasting impact. Thank you for your service, Hope! ???????? Let’s talk about LONGLEAF PINES and FIRE?!?!???????? Did you know fire plays a critical role in keeping longleaf pine forests healthy? Historically, natural fires swept through the Southeast, clearing out overgrown vegetation and creating the perfect conditions for these towering pines to thrive. Today, controlled burns help maintain and restore these fire-adapted forests, ensuring they remain strong for generations. SECC’s Fire Technicians Individual Placements are on the front lines this season, actively bringing fire back to longleaf pine habitats in Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. In partnership with The Nature Conservancy of Georgia and others, these placements conduct controlled burns, improve wildlife habitat, and support responsible land management. Their work helps revitalize the rare Montane Longleaf forest, reducing wildfire risks and keeping these woodlands thriving. Talk about the long (leaf) burn. ?? @nature_org @americorps @conservationlegacy @thecorpsnetwork #LongleafPine #PrescribedFire #FireEcology #ForestRestoration #SoutheastForests #SECC #WildlifeHabitat #ControlledBurns #LandManagement #HealthyForests #NatureConservancy
