The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), in partnership with Hutchinson County, Davison County, the cities of Mitchell and Parkston, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will host a public meeting open house to inform residents on the progress of the S.D. Highway 37 Corridor Study. The public meeting open house is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024, at the Davison County Fairgrounds Complex located at 3200 W. Havens Ave. in Mitchell. The purpose of the study is to develop a long-range plan for the S.D. Highway 37 corridor from the S.D. Highway 44 intersection in Parkston to the Spruce Street intersection in Mitchell. The study will also finalize design plans for the upcoming reconstruction of S.D. Highway 37 within the city of Parkston. The public meeting open house will be informal with opportunities for one-on-one discussions with the study team. A presentation will be given at 6 p.m. The public will also have the opportunity to submit written comments at the public meeting open house. For those unable to attend the public meeting, or have interest in additional information, the presentation and displays will be available on the study website at https://lnkd.in/gMEsG6fj. On Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, S.D. Highway 37 (Dakota Avenue) is scheduled to reopen to traffic from Market Street to 7th Street in Huron. This section of Highway 37 has been closed since April 2024 as part of a two-year reconstruction project. Highway 37 will be fully reopened to traffic until operations continue in the spring of 2025. Phase two of the reconstruction project from U.S. Highway 14 to Market Street and 7th Street to 9th Street will be completed during the summer of 2025. The prime contractor for the $14.2 million project is BX Civil and Construction of Dell Rapids, SD. The overall completion date for the project is October 2025. The 10th Street and 11th Street Viaduct bridges in downtown Sioux Falls are nearing the end of their lifespan. To plan for their reconstruction, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), in conjunction with the City of Sioux Falls, South Eastern Council of Governments (SECOG)/Sioux Falls Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), are conducting a comprehensive study from 2024 through 2026. The study objective is to identify and evaluate concepts to replace the bridges and determine a recommendation. We want your input! The 2024 South Dakota Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) details a vision for highway safety in South Dakota and outlines interim objectives to progress toward a safer transportation system. Throughout the Plan there are many informative graphics that help illustrate the importance of highway safety. The map below illustrates severe intersection crash frequency in South Dakota from 2018-2022. The SDDOT can use this map to identify intersections that are in need of safety improvement projects, such as the U.S. Highway 85 and E. Colorado Boulevard intersection near Spearfish (top left image). The SDDOT recently completed the U.S. Highway 85 – Spearfish to Deadwood Corridor Study that evaluated existing and future conditions of the corridor and potential improvements related to roadway conditions, traffic operations, and safety. Today, Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, crews are completing work on a dust chloride application on five sections of U.S. Highway 12 between Morristown and Watauga. The dust chloride application will total three miles in length and will be completed by the end of the day. Motorists are advised that the application may cause the roadway to be temporarily slippery through Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. Travelers are asked to adjust driving speeds and use caution through this area. This work is part of a larger project that involves the reconstruction of Highway 12, including the replacement of the bridge one-mile east of Morristown. No unauthorized person shall erect or maintain upon any highway, any warning or direction sign, marker, signal, or light in imitation of any official sign, marker, signal, or light. In addition, no person shall place or maintain nor shall any public authority permit any traffic sign or signal bearing any commercial advertising upon any highway.
