School is back in full swing, and we are excited to ramp up our #STEM education and youth outreach again! STEM education helps students become better problem solvers, critical thinkers, and spark creativity and curiosity about the world around them. ?? To inspire the next generation of energy engineers, we deploy hands-on activities that allow students to learn about #offshorewind energy in an engaging way. With our turbine design activity, students can put themselves in the role of an offshore wind engineer and are challenged with building turbine platforms using an assortment of recycled materials. Check out this video from our partner US Sailing that captures local students in action as they build and explain their turbine designs: https://lnkd.in/emPEZ2At

SouthCoast Wind is developing a federal offshore wind lease area off New England — located over 30 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and 20 miles south of Nantucket— that has the potential to generate 2,400 megawatts (MW) of low-cost clean energy, or enough to power over a million homes. SouthCoast Wind is backed by OW Ocean Winds, an established developer of offshore wind projects worldwide with deep experience in managing the complexities of offshore energy development projects. We are committed to safety first and safety always, innovation and industry development, and investing in our local communities.

Failure to invest in clean energy comes at a tremendous cost to our most vulnerable residents. Our respected friend and colleague, Dr. Mark Mitchell shared thoughts on Connecticut’s recent inaction on offshore wind and what it means for environmental justice communities.? “I am hopeful that Connecticut’s announcement will be coming soon, and Governor Lamont joins the fray. If not, I am afraid that this will become another environmental justice nightmare." Read the full Op-ed here ?? https://lnkd.in/eZd9zkZn #offshorewind

Last week, SouthCoast Wind and RPS hosted our 3rd annual protected species observer (PSO) training program for local Native American communities at our Fall River office. This cost-free, 10-day program provides accelerated training and all certifications required to work as a PSO — enabling new offshore career paths! An article by ecoRI News highlights the vital role that PSOs play in the offshore wind industry, by ensuring the safety of marine mammals during development and construction. Protecting marine life and the marine environment is a key priority for SouthCoast Wind and is incorporated into all aspects of the development process. By prioritizing the protection of marine ecosystems, we are paving the way for a cleaner, greener future where energy innovation coexists with the health of our oceans. I've been going to the Jersey Shore for decades, and?I recognize that my industry is a divisive topic down there. For climate week, I decided to write an op-ed to try and dispel some of the myths being told about offshore wind. ? I come at this from a position of empathy, as I think it is very hard for folks at the shore to figure out the truth amidst an onslaught of misinformation.? ? One fact that folks at the shore know all too well is that because of rising seas, every Nor'easter has the potential to decimate these sensitive barrier islands.?Is OSW the only solution here??Probably not, but it is a great start.? Our industry has the ability to generate carbon-free electricity, at scale, by harnessing a resource that costs nothing and blows 24/7, 365 days a year. For Climate Week, let's continue to get the truth out about our industry, and why it's so important that we are successful. https://lnkd.in/gpTTu7Ms

For decades, fossil fuel generation sources have been located in or near environmental justice communities leading to a disparity in the rates of asthma and other respiratory and heart conditions among minority and disadvantaged households. Environmental justice champion and public health physician Dr. Mark Mitchell wrote about his experience working and living in Connecticut as fossil fuel pollution plagued vulnerable communities in the state. “The neighborhoods surrounding these facilities have some of the highest rates of asthma and respiratory disease in the state. The impact on communities is unmistakable, unfair, and expensive.” Now, Dr. Mitchell is advocating for more clean energy sources to reduce Connecticut’s reliance on fossil fuels. “Without investment in solar and offshore wind today, our solution to the looming 2030 energy crisis will be more of the same: burn even more oil, most likely in low wealth communities that are primarily populated by people of color.” As New England begins to transition away from fossil fuels, we can improve grid reliability and create good paying jobs without contributing to disproportionate impacts of fossil fuels and the climate crisis. In Middletown, RI, campers at the Norman Bird Sanctuary summer camp celebrated “Living Green” — a week dedicated to learning about sustainable practices, green technology, and renewable energy! Our team joined the group of campers as guest speakers to share information about the different types of energy sources, their impact on the environment, and the power of offshore wind here in Rhode Island. Environmental conservation is the cornerstone of The Norman Bird Sanctuary as their 300-acre property serves as a sanctuary for the surrounding wildlife and education center encouraging year-round stewardship and climate action. ?? #offshorewind #stemeducation #environmentalconservation?
