Recently, Chris LeBlanc, Executive Director Facility Health Services at Southcoast Health attended the Roosevelt Strategic Council 2024 Smart Data for Energy Summit in Washington, D.C. At this event, Chris had the opportunity to speak on a panel titled “Healthcare Systems and Higher Education Universities: What is the functional value we want to achieve through digital technology in support of our energy optimization goals?” During the discussion, Chris shared valuable insights about how Southcoast Health uses energy data to make energy-saving and air-quality decisions. He explained how our facilities team uses the energy data to address challenges such as maintaining precise control over temperatures and humidity levels, particularly in sensitive areas like surgery equipment storage. These controls are vital for preserving the condition of medical devices and equipment. “The data not only helps us address problems faster,” said Chris. “But it also provides insight into our performance, so we know where improvements are needed and where we need to focus on improving our systems and building infrastructure to provide a better healing environment for our patients.” Areas of discussion also touched upon systems’ end goals for energy efficiency such as lowering costs by improving energy efficiency. We thank Chris for his participation and representing the work of our wonderful teams at Southcoast Health!

Recently, Atlantic Subaru of Bourne, Massachusetts visited the Southcoast Health Cancer Center to donate 80 blankets as part of their Subaru Loves to Care program in partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). “We wanted to keep the donation local and directly help those in our community,” says Caleb Weglarz, General Sales Manager at Atlantic Subaru. “Southcoast Health was the perfect choice, and we hope that this simple act can make a meaningful difference in someone’s journey with cancer.” Packaged in heart-shaped carrying cases, the blankets can also be used as a pillow while patients are undergoing cancer treatment. The donations included handwritten messages of hope from the dealership’s employees and its customers. The messages were filled with words of strength and positivity, reminding our patients that they are not alone in their fight. We are extremely thankful to Atlantic Subaru for their generous donation for our patients. These items will bring much-needed comfort and hope to many during their treatment journey. As patients recover from open-heart surgery at Charlton Memorial Hospital, they are each gifted a stuffed heart-shaped pillow to help them on their healing journey. “Although they are a thoughtful gift, these pillows provide much more than a comforting touch. In the weeks after surgery, they provide support to our patients when they are coughing and moving around. They are also a huge help with pain-relief as patients can hug them to their chests to apply pressure as they heal,” said Holly Marcello, Manager of Patient Care on the cardiovascular step-down unit at Charlton Memorial. When this tradition first started, groups of local volunteers would handmake each of the pillows for our patients. However, as our program at Southcoast Health Heart and Vascular continues to grow, we are now performing over 300 open-heart cases a year. To help keep up with the patient volume, Robinson+Cole generously stepped in to help the volunteers by donating additional pillows and patient comfort items to the cardiovascular intensive care and cardiovascular step-down units. “We know how important it is to have world-class heart and vascular services like this in the community, and we are honored to be a part of each patient’s recovery journey,” said Lisa Boyle, Partner at Robinson+Cole. This collaborative effort highlights the powerful impact of community involvement in healthcare. We are so thankful for our generous volunteers and Robinson+Cole for their ongoing dedication to ensuring that each patient has a heartfelt gift to go home with.
