The National Communication Authority (NCA) of South Sudan has enforced a 90-day ban on social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, starting Wednesday night. This measure follows the circulation of violent incidents involving South Sudanese in Sudan on social media. The NCA justified the decision, citing concerns that the graphic content might provoke further violence and threaten public safety and mental well-being. Telecommunication providers such as MTN and Zain have already started implementing the directive, restricting users from accessing these platforms through their networks.

It's crucial for South Sudan to take a strategic approach to economic diversification, especially given the reliance on oil revenue, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. While the resumption of oil operations with Sudan could offer temporary relief, but there is a clear need for South Sudan to explore opportunities for diversification into sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and energy. Stay close, stay informed, and be part of the conversation that will drive change. #SSMJ #Energy #Mining #Oil #EconomicDevelopment #Sustainability #SouthSudan
South Sudan is entering its second year without oil revenues due to the cessation of operations stemming from the conflict in Sudan. With oil contributing to more than 80% of the fiscal budget, the economic outlook for the country in 2024-2025 appears bleak. While mining presents an attractive alternative and potential solution for the struggling economy, the sector seems to be lacking the momentum necessary to address the dire situation effectively. In the meantime, South Sudan and Sudan appear to be finding common ground and are working toward the resumption of oil operations. However, it is clear that there is a need to diversify the economy away from oil and move towards more sustainable sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and energy, as well as the enactment of favorable laws to encourage investment.

A tragic gold mine collapse in Nakiki Village, Kapoeta South County, claimed 10 lives after heavy rains destabilized the structure. Rescue teams have recovered five bodies so far, with five still trapped in a pit 8-9 meters deep. Doctor John Isaac, Medical Director at Kapoeta Civil Hospital, confirmed that the three injured miners are receiving treatment at the facility and are improving. Juma Tigol, coordinator of the Civil Society Network in Greater Kapoeta, expressed frustration over the lack of action despite repeated accidents. “Such incidents of mines collapsing have happened several times, and many people have died. The government should devise means for best mining practices and enlighten the communities on how to mine safely. The miners need to be trained in safe practices.” This incident underscores the risks of informal mining and the critical need for regulation, training, and community support. #SSMJ #MiningSafety #ArtisanalMining #SouthSudan #MiningInnovation #MiningAccident #SouthSudan #MiningSafety #Kapoeta https://rb.gy/vy40vr
