According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2011 and 2023, there were a total of 1,940 workplace fatalities involving electricity.? ? Facility managers have a responsibility to ensure that electrical safety remains at the core of broader safety plans and protocols. Implementing proper training both improves the quality of work and protects all involved parties against electrical hazards. Accidental contact with energized equipment causes 45% of all electrically related deaths in the workplace. Be sure to follow the hierarchy of controls and other safety practices on every job. Always perform a site and risk assessment and test for voltage, including the area around the equipment you are working on, before conducting any work. Remember to always follow proper lockout/tagout procedures and avoid complacency.
