Revitalizing South L.A. by moving residents to economic opportunity.
关于我们
Established in 2014 and led by Los Angeles Trade Technical College, the South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z) is a historic and diverse partnership of more than 70 public, private, and community-based organizations working to move residents to economic opportunity. As a place- based initiative, SLATE-Z is home to nearly 198,000 residents in parts of Vernon Central, South Park, Florence, Exposition Park, Vermont Square, Leimert Park, and a small portion of the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhoods. The name “Transit Empowerment Zone” was chosen out of a desire to capitalize on the compelling opportunities that new light rail lines and ongoing public transit expansion bring for neighborhood revitalization, and for connecting residents to education and economic opportunities. SLATE-Z’s comprehensive collective impact strategy intersects jobs, workforce development, education, public safety, and transit to tackle the 46% poverty level in the area – one of the highest urban poverty rates in the nation. As a result of its efforts, in June 2016, SLATE-Z was designated a federal Promise Zone by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the third round of the competition. The SLATE-Z Partnership seeks to cut through bureaucracies to tackle intractable problems to reduce poverty in the area. Register for our events: https://linktr.ee/SlatezMediaAndEvents

Leading Teams to Achieve Sustainable Urban Transformation | Smart Cities, Climate Resilience, Green Infrastructure
Challenging the typical top-down approach to addressing urban #sustainable development challenges, the California Strategic Growth Council's Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) Program is driving neighborhood-led development to foster healthy, prosperous, and #resilient communities. In South Los Angeles, the $35M South LA Eco-Lab TCC investment is implementing community-level transformative climate action that includes multiple, coordinated greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects that provide local economic, environmental, and health benefits. As the initiative enters year two of implementation, project partners are harnessing systems-thinking to catalyze urban shifts to reduce emissions and improve climate resilience. GRID Alternatives , one of the 18 partners of the initiative, is implementing this vision by providing access to #renewable energy, reducing energy bills for families, and facilitating workforce training for residents seeking solar careers. Using a people-first model, GRID is deploying solar projects that serve qualifying households and preparing residents to enter the #cleanenergy workforce. It was an honor to be a part of GRID's first of 140 solar rooftop panel installations under the initiative. Kudos to Vanesa Iniguez for your unwavering leadership as the South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z)'s South LA Eco-Lab Program Manager and centering community voices in the ongoing decision-making process of expanding the project boundaries. The South LA Eco-Lab is successfully demonstrating the importance of empowering the communities most impacted by pollution to choose their own goals, strategies, and projects to enact #transformational change. #solar #cleanenergy #urbansustainability #greenjobs

Always enjoy working with the USC Neighborhood Data for Social Change (NDSC) team! Take a look and listen to how we use their data insights to understand how we can continue making South Los Angeles safer for all its residents, students, and businesses.
Crossing Figueroa is deadly, and sadly, we’re not exaggerating. Since 2010, three intersections along Figueroa have seen 115 collisions resulting in severe injury or death for pedestrians and cyclists. Data Analyst Cameron Yap explains how our partnership with South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z) enabled this data to pinpoint the most dangerous intersections around the University of Southern California University Park Campus. How many severe traffic collisions have recently occurred near you? Drop a neighborhood in the comments and we will show you. #data #losangeles #traffic

In Los Angeles, grassroots organizations on the frontlines of #environmentaljustice are key to advancing urban sustainable development and confronting the city’s most pressing climate challenges. By cultivating partnerships with communities facing legacy pollution, climate change, and persistent disinvestment, the City of Los Angeles is strengthening city-community collaboration to address climate challenges and ensure a holistic approach to climate action and #equity. This week I joined colleagues from across the city collaborating through the #EJReady initiative to participate in the Catalyzing Local Climate Action in Los Angeles Workshop, hosted by C40 Cities, Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN), and Climate Mayors. The gathering brought together environmental justice and sustainable city development leaders to build on existing climate action work and foster more intentional community partnerships. It was great to see friends who are advancing mobility justice, sustainable land use, brownfield remediation, urban greening, energy efficiency, affordable housing, and to meet so many other leaders who are committed to cross-cutting #urbansustainability outcomes. The roundtable breakouts based on priority issue areas were instrumental in facilitating direct engagement between #CBOs and city agencies to identify and develop partnerships that align with funding opportunities, community needs and city priorities. For South Los Angeles, these topics included expanding shared mobility options for residents, creating green jobs career pathways for youth, and creating legacy climate resilient infrastructure investments that last beyond the 2028 Olympics. Thank you to the Liberty Hill Foundation EJReady cohort, to Deputy Mayor Nancy Sutley, to all the City of Los Angeles leaders advancing climate action, and I look forward to continued partnership and collaboration. #justice40 #climateaction #sustainability #slatez
