Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed annually on November 20, when we remember people, whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence. This year, we mark the 25th anniversary of TDoR. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman who was murdered in her apartment in 1998. Since then, TDOR has become an internationally recognized day of reflection - a moment to mourn, honor, and remember those we have lost while also reminding ourselves of the resilience and strength within the trans community. This year, the 25th anniversary of TDoR, it is crucial to highlight the challenges faced by the trans community. At least 27 transgender people have been murdered in the United States due to transphobic violence this year, and a record number of anti-trans bills have been introduced. Systemic issues, such as racism, misogyny, and transphobia, disproportionately impact the most vulnerable within the trans community. Trans women of color make up 78% of those killed by transphobic violence, highlighting the intersection of hate and misinformation that drives this violence. Barriers to healthcare, inadequate mental health support, employment discrimination, and the global surge of anti-trans legislation contribute to the violence directed at the trans community. These are not random or isolated incidents but a direct consequence of systems that continue to marginalize and dehumanize transgender people. How can I get involved in the Transgender Day of Remembrance? ·????????Participate in?Transgender Day of Remembrance by attending a vigil on November 20. ? ·????????Stand in solidarity by showing support to the community, allowing visibility and safe spaces.? ·????????Be an ally who provides kindness and compassion to those who are currently scared, anxious, anyone fearing for their safety, or if they will have access to care.? ·????????Add your pronouns?to your email signature and lead with them when you introduce yourself. ·????????Be curious and keep learning. Do your research and make an effort to get educated on this matter, ask your 2SLGBTQIA+ TRC members for a conversation, or for places to read up.? ·????????Be an advocate, learn how you can contribute to the fight against transphobia. ·????????If you can, donate to some of the organizations actively working to keep trans people alive.?? ·????????Share the resources (attached) with as many people as you can, and whoever needs it. Aimee Casselberry has been an invaluable member of Sound since July of 2021, consistently demonstrating leadership, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to our goals. She began her journey at Sound as a Supervisor and was promoted to Call Center Manager in 2022. Her dedication to excellence and ability to inspire others has set her apart, and we are confident that she will continue to thrive in this new leadership role. In her new capacity as Director, Aimee will focus on overseeing and managing the administrative functions, including the Call Center and Front Desk, that support the overall operations and strategic goals of Sound. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of Aimee’s hard work, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact she will have in driving the success of the Administrative Services department and Sound. Please join us in congratulating Aimee on this well-earned promotion. We are excited for the future and look forward to all the great things she will accomplish in this new role.
