This International Women’s Day, we’re honoring the incredible collaboration behind INHERITANCE—a beautiful public art piece at Kent/Des Moines Station. Created by an all-women team, including Michelle de la Vega, STart (Sound Transit Art) Program Manager Ashley Long, and Chelsea Gaddy from Force/Collide, this sculpture celebrates community heritage and the power of women’s leadership in public art. We are doing more than delivering transit.??? Our transit-oriented development (TOD) program fosters vibrant, livable communities around transit by creating opportunities for development and affordable housing near our stations.? ? The Rainier Valley Affordable Homeownership Initiative is doing just that. Sound Transit transferred ten properties to Seattle’s Office of Housing at no cost in 2020. They then partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to realize a vision for seven affordable homes on the first three of the sites to be developed. These will give seven families the opportunity to put down roots and build generational wealth in homes that are affordable to them.? ? Black History Month at Sound Transit wraps up with an annual soul food feast. Food is an integral part of Black culture that brings people together to honor traditions and even resist oppression. Throughout history, food has meant sustenance as well as a means to preserve cultural identity, create a sense of belonging and pass down traditions from generation to generation. ??? New public art at Auburn Sounder Station! “Companion Garden” by?RYAN! Feddersen?is now on display, blending culture, nature, and healing in a beautiful tribute to the region’s indigenous heritage. This stunning installation, created in collaboration with STart (Sound Transit Art Program), features indigenous plants like s?i?yu (Strawberry), taqa (Salal), and sx??i (Oregon Grape). The design draws from Plateau Pictorial Beadwork traditions, creating a vibrant and thought-provoking piece that connects commuters with nature and cultural history. ?? 2025 is the Year of the Snake, and #LunarNewYear celebrations are in full swing across our region! At Sound Transit, employees from the SPAM employee resource group joined the festivities by preparing dishes rich with symbolic meaning, from egg rolls that represent wealth and prosperity, dumplings that symbolize hope and fortune (the more you eat, the more prosperous your year), and noodles that signify a wish for longevity and good health. Food will also take center stage at Seattle’s Chinatown-International District’s Lunar New Year Celebration on Feb. 22 (and the 1 Line is a great way to get there!). Yesterday, Sound Transit’s Blacks Empowering Success in Transit Employee Resource Group (BEST) raised the Pan-African flag in honor of Black History Month—a powerful emblem of resilience, unity, and self-determination. As it soared, so did our collective commitment to truth, justice, and the legacy of those who paved the way. Black history isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s about shaping the future. The day's events also featured the singing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in front of Union Station, immediately followed by employees gathering in the Ruth Fisher Boardroom to hear about Black activism in transit with Elmer Dixon. Transit Equity Day is celebrated on February 4th, in honor of civil rights activist Rosa Parks’ birthday. While unequal access to transportation persists to this day, Sound Transit is helping transform our region by creating greater access to opportunity, and more affordable housing through transit-oriented development. Our expanding transit system provides living wage jobs during construction and operation, affordable connections to work, food, health care, entertainment and the essentials of everyday life, on trains sustainably powered by electricity. On Transit Equity Day 2025, Sound Transit employees recommit to leading our region's mobility transformation in a way that honors the legacy of Rosa Parks, renews our commitment to make public transit accessible and affordable, and continues to connect more people to more places to make life better and create equitable opportunities for all.

The new 1 Line station on NE 130th St is officially named Pinehurst Station! After robust public engagement and an internal station name evaluation, “Pinehurst Station” emerged as the top choice, and the name was approved by the Sound Transit Board. Starting in 2026, Pinehurst Station will serve the growing residential neighborhood between Northgate and Shoreline South/148th Street stations. The project includes pedestrian and bicycle connections, bus stops at the 130th/5th Avenue intersection, a dedicated paratransit drop-off area, a passenger vehicle drop-off area, and incredible station artwork developed by Seattle-based artist, Romson Bustillo.
