Did you know that Jackson Street in Seattle, Washington, was once a vibrant epicenter of jazz music during the 1910s–1930s? This lively area was home to many of the city’s pioneering African American and Asian residents. Sadly, segregation kept talented Black jazz musicians from performing in downtown white nightclubs, making Jackson Street a significant refuge for these artists. The jazz scene truly began in 1918 when Miss Lillian Smith's Jazz Band performed at Washington Hall to raise funds for the NAACP, igniting a cultural revolution in Seattle! Russell "Noodles" Smith played a pivotal role by opening the Dumas Club in 1917 and later moving the Entertainers Cabaret to the same location, nurturing a community of extraordinary talent. Jazz lovers flocked to iconic clubs such as the 411 Club at 411 Maynard Avenue S, Club Maynard at 612 Maynard, the Ebony Café at 5th and S Jackson, and the Green Dot at 509 S Jackson. The Black & Tan at 1040 S Jackson boasted its very own orchestra, highlighting the richness of this musical era. Notable musicians like Quincy Jones and Ernestine Anderson shaped the scene, along with Ray Charles, Dave Lewis, and Frank Waldron, who mentored young artists like Quincy and Buddy Catlett. However, as the 1960s approached, the jazz scene on Jackson Street faced challenges due to the legalization of hard liquor, the end of music union segregation, and the rising popularity of rock ‘n’ roll. Today, you can celebrate this remarkable history by exploring the Jackson Street Jazz Trail, a self-guided walking tour that invites you to experience Seattle’s rich jazz legacy!

The fiery fiddle of maestro Geoffrey Castle added Celtic Christmas concerts in Bellevue this year: Nov. 30, 3 p.m. matinee and a 7 p.m. the Meydenbauer Center Theatre While Castle’s incredible musicianship is a major draw, Christmas in Washington, a Washington non-profit, is all about community and giving back. With each year’s ticket sales, the show supports various community initiatives across the state, spreading holiday warmth and kindness. This purpose-driven approach, combined with the annual reunion of performers, has created a annual tradition that resonates deeply with local audiences. For an extra treat, Castle features the Seattle Irish Dance Company’s Celtic dancers, guitarist and Irish tenor Dan Connolly, and singing sensation and former Miss Kirkland Emily McIntosh, making each show a fully immersive holiday celebration.
