Today we give a shout-out to Rotary Club of Oakland #3 and your dedication to our local community. Your longtime support of our organization and of Oakland seniors has been tremendous. Thanks to a generous $5,000 grant from Oakland Rotary Club, we were able to purchase new, state-of-the-art sheet pan racks, helping us keep our kitchen running smoothly. We thank you for all you do!

Thank you, Cargill, for your generous $30,000 grant, in support of meals for 541 seniors and expanding our volunteer base in Fremont, Newark, and Union City over the past year. Cargill’s commitment to creating a more food-secure world makes a lasting impact, and we’re grateful to be part of this mission. This was a matching grant, generously matched locally by Brian Luce, Newark, thank you for helping us nourish our community!

Oakland’s Community Based Organizations (CBOs) provide critical services for our city’s most vulnerable residents. We, along with 12 of our partner CBOs, suddenly and without warning, had our funding cut by the city. We’re lifting up the seniors we serve, asking the city to keep investing in our older neighbors.

What do Oakland budget cuts mean for the seniors we serve? Our Executive Director, Charlie Deterline, spoke to KPIX | CBS San Francisco/Bay Area about the $2.6M in funding that was recently cut for 13 community organizations, including ours. He also took the time to deliver meals and to sit down with concerned clients like John Hutchinson. "What I read and see on the TV, what's going on right now...people like me are scared to death," John said. "[My driver] sits down there, talks through the screen, gives me the food, and I get a chance to see the dog and talk to him.?It's the only contact I have with people, you know? It's a blessing." While Charlie provided reassurances that SOS Meals on Wheels "isn't going anywhere" he was frank about our challenges. "We're going to need more support," Charlie said.
