In our design for The District of Columbia Stabilization and Sobering Center (DCSSC), we created a holistic therapeutic environment where consumers can be supported on their personal journeys of recovery. The space occupies the majority of the first floor of a roughly 29,000 square foot existing building in Washington, D.C, serving users on a daily basis and accommodating overnight short-term stays. ? The design creates an environment that is welcoming, thoughtful, and therapeutic, while keeping in mind universal accessibility, visibility, operational considerations, and safety. Our design is user-focused, with an accessible building entry, a new exterior vestibule, a check-in and waiting area, short-term stay accommodations, exam rooms, and a nursing station. Offices and staff support spaces are located along the western edge of the building and are accessed from a secure hallway. Mayor Muriel Bowser assisted with the opening of the facility, addressing staff after taking a tour of the building. Her involvement showcases the importance of this facility to the city, and forecasts a successful beginning to an essential community service. #architecture #washingtondc #innovation #soberingcenter #design #communitycenter
