Optical flow proves crucial in high water flow at Prado Dam The monitoring of accurate and reliable flow data can be particularly challenging in certain site and hydraulic conditions when using traditional measurement methods. Many natural and man-made waterways, such as rivers, streams, and canals, often exhibit complex flow patterns and hydraulic characteristics that can make it difficult to obtain precise, representative flow data using standard techniques. The CVSG optical flow solution developed rating curve independent of streamflow gauging’s performed during flow releases, demonstrating that the CVSG is a matured flow monitoring solution that performs just as well as traditional methods at this challenging sites. This result is an exciting breakthrough for CW3E and their collaborators as they explore new, adaptable methods to accurately measure flow at challenging sites where traditional approaches fall short. At Prado Dam, their specific goal is to retain more water during the flood season, allowing for a more consistent release during the dry season to maximize groundwater recharge. This week our #Xylem water quality and flow measurement instruments #YSI and #SonTek have been showcased at #Smagua 2025 ( Zaragoza) at the stand of our partner #Instrumentación Analitica #Instru. Taking advantage of the event we also organized a demonstration, with the collaboration of CH Ebro, of our new #Surfbee aquatic drone for flow measurements, which was attended by hydrologists from various regions of Spain. What a fantastic week in Finland! I had the pleasure of helping a team from the University of Turku with fieldwork on the Oulanka river near Ruka Lapland. This data is vital to the Digital Waters research programme to improve the management of water globally. We used SonTek instruments supplied by Finnish distributors GWM-Engineering installing 7 SL1500 fixed ADCP and conducted under ice discharge measurements around a river meander with SonTek M9 and RS5.
