We reckon you'll be swept away with this week’s drool-worthy tool 'cos we’re taking a look at the Sontek FlowTracker2 handheld Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Try saying that ten times fast! Speaking of speed ?? this gadget helps our hydrologists measure the speed water is flowing in a river or stream. The team choose a spot along the river that’s free from things like large logs that might impact the flow. Then, they stand downstream and go from one bank to the other marking roughly twenty spots along the way. At each spot they attach the Y shaped metal bit aka the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) to the end of the silver pole or top-setting rod. The rod helps them set the ADV to a certain depth, so it can measure the speed of H2O flowing between the acoustic beams. Once that's done, the data is sent to their handheld device and the flow is calculated from the measurements. Generally, the FlowTracker2 is used downstream from dams to make sure there is enough water getting through to the environment. A Blend of Old and New at Stapelen Castle: This striking image highlights the contrast between cutting-edge technology and historic charm. The SonTek-RS5, a modern water monitoring ADCP marvel, meets the timeless Stapelen Castle in Boxtel, North Brabant. Known as a monastery and headquarters of the Dutch Assumptionists, the castle adds a stunning backdrop to innovation. Supporting Waterboard the Dommel: Xylem distributor ELSCOLAB partnered with Waterboard the Dommel to verify discharge points using the SonTek-RS5 paired with the rQPod duo Torrent board. This versatile setup, soon to include YSI, a Xylem brand EXO water quality monitoring, ensures efficient data collection. Although the still waters near the castle were unsuitable for data collection and training, a nearby section of the Dommel—a 120 km river flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands—offered the perfect setting for this data verification exercise. This week, Xylem and SonTek technology experts are in Colombia, delivering specialized training to around 20 participants from leading environmental agencies, including IDEAM Colombia (Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies), CAR (Cundinamarca’s environmental agency), SDA (Bogotá’s Environmental Secretariat), and Corpochivor (Corporacion Regional Autonoma de Chivor). This training is part of the prize package awarded to IDEAM as a winner of the SonTek-RS5 Man City promotion. IDEAM received three days of customized training with SonTek Application Experts, plus a signed RS5 instrument from Manchester City Football Club, highlighting our partnership to raise awareness of critical water challenges through the power of football. The training sessions include classroom lessons at IDEAM and hands-on data collection at a CAR-managed monitoring station along the Bogotá River. Despite its history of pollution, this river is now seeing gradual improvement thanks to ongoing rehabilitation efforts. Senior Application Engineer Isaac Jones and Latin America Sales Manager Ivan Victoria led the training. They also presented an official Man City kit to IDEAM’s Operations Planning Coordinator, Jorge Andres Gonzalez, in recognition of this valuable collaboration. One of the perks of my job is I get to talk about the importance of water and what we can to to use it wisely. Today I got to share that message with my daughter's Transitional Kindergarten class, and show them some of the awesome technology we make at SonTek - a Xylem Brand for measuring water flow. I was impressed with how much these kids know, and happy to have my daughter help to share the message!
