Cloud IAM Tip #1: Wildcard (*) Permissions Are a Hidden Risk How many identities in your cloud have star permissions? If you’re guessing 10-15%, you’re being optimistic. As Nigel Sood and Matthew Carle revealed in their Access '24 session, 25% of identities in AWS estates they analyzed had at least one (*) permission. This grants them access to all existing permissions AND automatically includes any new permissions AWS introduces. Even worse? 10% of all identities had access to sensitive permissions they never should have—just because of a star permission assigned to them. And this isn’t just an AWS problem. The same wildcard risks exist in Azure and GCP. If you haven’t checked for (*) permissions in your cloud, now’s the time. Because what’s granted today could change tomorrow. ??
