关于我们

The mission of the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) is to foster student success through service to students, schools, and the community. We are a strategic partner to the county’s 40 districts and their 175 schools, providing service and support to help them meet legal mandates, operate cost-effectively, and raise student achievement. SCOE provides fiscal oversight to districts and operates schools for special education and alternative education students not enrolled at district sites. SCOE’s career technical education (CTE) programs are offered as elective classes at every comprehensive high school as part of the county’s commitment to graduate college- and career-ready students.

Meet our next Sonoma County Board of Education trustee, Mary Watts! ?? Mary, who was recently elected to represent central Sonoma County, is the product of public schools and the daughter of a theater teacher. She was motivated to run for the trustee seat, in part, by her two daughters, the oldest of whom will soon attend transitional kindergarten and has an individualized education plan for speech issues. SCOE and County Superintendent Dr. Amie Carter last week welcomed more than 100 teachers, administrators, and counselors for a two-day workshop on equitable grading and assessment practices! The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Shantha Smith of Crescendo Education Group and emphasized the importance of centering assessments and grading around whether students are learning the material. This approach de-emphasizes practices that reward or punish specific types of learning, such as awarding grades for speaking up in class or giving a student a 0 for an assignment that is turned in late. It was inspiring to see so many passionate educators focused on student learning! ??

SCOE Foster and Homeless Youth Education Services Coordinator Joanna Paun recently addressed the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to highlight work that SCOE and Sonoma County Schools do to connect foster and homeless youth to resources and services. Students who are couch surfing, living in cars, doubled up with other families, or living in hotels or on the streets are much more likely to be chronically absent from school and can struggle to meet graduation requirements. We’re thankful for the opportunity to highlight the needs of the more than 1,000 public school students experiencing homelessness in Sonoma County.

In recognition of November as Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month, SCOE recently hosted a cultural celebration and discussion with some of Sonoma County’s Native students, educators, and community members! After a song, blessing and land acknowledgement, SCOE staff took in a dance performance by students from Piner High School and Comstock Middle School. Santa Rosa City Schools Indian Education Liaison Elizabeth Billy then gave an educational presentation and facilitated a panel discussion with the students, who shared their connections to their heritage and answered questions from the audience. We’re so thankful to everyone who came! ??

SCOE was excited to host the Sonoma County Mayors Committee on Employment for People with Disabilities’ annual awards breakfast. Among the businesses recognized for their inclusion and championing of workers with disabilities was Pacific Market. The grocer is one of many employers that works closely with SCOE to teach career skills to young adults with disabilities ages 18 to 22. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to Healdsburg Mayor David Hagele for recognizing Pacific Market’s work! School families, this one’s for you! ?? We have two free resources to help you support the mental health of your children and teens. The first is a consultation line that pairs mental health professionals with parents and caregivers looking for strategies to support youth experiencing mental health or behavioral challenges. The second resource is a virtual workshop series that covers key mental health topics related to youth and is available in English and Spanish.

(En espa?ol abajo) Sonoma County Superintendent Dr. Amie Carter shared the mental health struggles of her youngest daughter, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teen, at Saturday’s NAMIWalk in Santa Rosa. The event was organized by NAMI Sonoma County, a lifeline for her family during an incredibly difficult time. Connecting young people who have mental health needs with community resources and adults who care is a vital part of the work we do at SCOE.
