A new justice paradigm is emerging in Uganda—and solar energy is lighting the way. In the rural Kole District, electricity is hard to come by. This means streets go unlit at night, community services are under-resourced, and citizens have little means of accessing information. Cyrus is a certified NEMA Environment Lead Expert with over 13 years of experience in biodiversity conservation, environmental management and project management. November marks the start of the dry season in Benin. That means, for the next six months, farmers can no longer rely on rainfall to water their crops. Historically, farmers in the region would trek in water from the nearest source, irrigating whatever crops they could manage by hand. Still, crop failures were common, and hunger and malnutrition followed. The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF)'s Solar Market Garden program sought to remedy this, and for over a decade has been equipping community farms with solar-powered drip irrigation systems. This sustainable technology helps farmers grow healthy produce year-round—ultimately improving farmer income and local food security.
