We’re ready for the work ahead in 2025! The Sojourn Strategies Team took a well-deserved break from the usual Zooms to come together and connect, celebrate some of the wins over the past year, and visualize and strategize about Sojourn’s future work. We were joined by an incredible guest speaker, Monique King-Viehland / Zithande, LLC, who shared inspiring and practical strategies to keep us grounded as leaders. And of course, it wouldn’t be a retreat without a bit of joyful and friendly competition on the mini-golf course. ?? Being together reminded us why we’re passionate about our work and helped us come back energized and inspired. Sojourn Strategies creates research designed to drive impact, not sit on a shelf. So, help us out and join the trend of organizations across the country, from PA to NC, using our Black Values Research during this election cycle. We talked to 3,000 Black people using an expansive values survey to help organizations and leaders deepen their understanding of the Black community. Too often, messages and programs that target Black voters focus only on demographics and fail to take into account other factors that influence voting and civic engagement. Our survey highlights five distinct values clusters, revealing the diversity of issues, values, and identities that influence civic engagement among Black voters. Happy Native American Heritage Month! This month, we recognize the rich culture and contributions of Native American communities, as well as leaders like Minnesota's Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, and the nation’s highest-ranking Native woman in executive office. Native Americans make up at least 3.4% of the U.S. population, yet represent only 0.07% of elected officials—meaning we need more than 17,000 Indigenous leaders in office to reach true representation. Leaders like Lt. Governor Flanagan are working to close this gap. Throughout her career, Governor Flanagan has championed policies that address homelessness, housing stability, Indigenous rights, and equity, including co-chairing the Young Women’s Initiative and establishing the nation’s first Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office.
