When did your passion for conservation take root? For SWCS CEO Clare Lindahl, it all started along the Mississippi River. She grew up watching her community gather around the river, each connected to it in different ways, and formed her own bond with the water and people. Today, Clare continues to grow her relationships with the river and her community. "The river still influences me to this day because I still go home and organize in my neighborhood in the Quad Cities," says Clare. At SWCS, we are helping root our members in conservation so they can grow their local communities to be strong and resilient. We encourage you to share your own story about how SWCS has helped you grow your own conservation roots and communities, and if you're able, support the SWCS programs you love by giving a donation today. Happy Halloween! We're bringing some soil "magic" to your feed from the latest #JSWC. A recent study found fall-seeded winter rye has benefits that linger even after termination. After one year, the rye cover crop's decomposing biomass significantly boosted microbial life, increased soil organic carbon, and enhanced soil nitrogen within the top 15 cm of soil. These hauntingly good results suggest that cover crops in frigid, submesic climates can have lasting soil health impacts.
