RSVP: Air-deploying wave buoys ahead of hurricanes to collect real-time data and protect coastal communities ??? On Thursday, December 5th, at 10am PT, join Sofar for a webinar exploring the National Oceanographic Partnership Program’s Hurricane Coastal Impacts project. During the session, we'll detail how the ground truth observations made by air-deployed wave buoys — including our Spotters — help government and coastal communities better predict and prepare for major hurricanes. Want to know what it takes to build scalable ocean sensing technology? If you’re at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I’ll be visiting the campus next week to do a talk on this. It's relevant for students (and faculty) in ocean-related fields, as well as anyone curious about open-source marine technology. Expect to learn: ~ a brief history of ocean sensing and prediction ~ how ocean data impacts the world ~ what a full-stack ocean/climate tech company actually does ~ about the AI and the sea Also expect some surprises ?? Where: Baskin Events Center, Engineering 2 room E2180 When: Monday Nov 18, 4:30-5:30pm

Join us on Thu. 12/5 at 10am PT to learn how Sofar and our National Oceanographic Partnership Program collaborators air-deploy wave buoys ahead of major hurricanes to make real-time observations of extreme conditions! During the webinar, we'll detail how these observations, along with ground truth data collected by other rapidly deployed sensors, help coastal communities and government agencies improve extreme storm predictions and early warning systems. Speakers: - Evan Shapiro: CTO, Sofar - Eric Stackpole: Bristlemouth Developer, Sofar - Jenna Brown: Research Oceanographer, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) - Jim Thomson: Senior Principal Oceanographer, University of Washington Save your spot: https://bit.ly/40OfI7s #SofarOcean

We are excited to announce that the US Navy is using Sofar’s Wayfinder platform to enhance safe routing at sea. ?? The Navy’s two primary weather forecasting centers, Fleet Weather Center - Norfolk (FWC-N) and Fleet Weather Center San Diego (FWC-SD), leverage Wayfinder’s optimized voyage guidance to identify safe and efficient route options for Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships. Wayfinder uses real-time data collected by Sofar’s global network of Spotter buoys to automatically generate a forecast along a vessel’s route and significantly reduce weather uncertainty. This empowers FWC personnel to validate forecast models, examine a vessel’s potential route options more efficiently, and reduce manual tasks. “Powered by our real-time ocean weather sensor network, Wayfinder will help the Navy scale its routing operations to support a heterogeneous fleet operating in conditions made more extreme by the effects of climate change,” said Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar. The Navy is piloting Wayfinder under U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC) and Sofar’s five-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Webinar: Expanding Spotter’s subsurface sensing suite with a hydrophone and dissolved oxygen sensor ?? Join Sofar CTO Evan Shapiro on Thursday, 11/7, at 10am PT / 1pm ET for a Marine Technology Society (MTS) webinar introducing our Spotter Platform’s newest subsurface integrations: a hydrophone and a dissolved oxygen sensor. Evan will be joined by Applied Ocean Sciences (AOS)’ CHRISTOPHER VERLINDEN and Precision Measurement Engineering (PME)’s Austin Vincent, who will detail how they used the Bristlemouth open standard to efficiently integrate the new sensors with Spotter. The panelists will explore how the devices lower the cost and complexity of measuring sound and water quality at scale, benefitting ocean industry, government and the research community. Mission Iconic Reefs in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) has made all data collected by its fleet of Spotter Platforms available to the public via Aqualink.org! FKNMS deployed Spotters at its seven major coral reef sites to collect and transmit critical surface and subsurface observations in real time. Katey Lesneski, PhD, research and monitoring coordinator for Mission: Iconic Reefs, said, "These data will provide a real time picture of reef conditions, helping us make decisions on whether to conduct fieldwork on days where the forecast is borderline. This information will also be immensely useful to restoration practitioners for determining if reef temperatures have exceeded the threshold for coral outplanting.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3NQUBKb Access data: https://bit.ly/48Cmb7b NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration #SofarOcean
