The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences mourns the loss of the incomparable James Earl Jones, who passed away at 93 in his Dutchess County home on September 9, 2024. James was more than a brilliant actor and iconic voice artist, he was a beacon of Black excellence, courage, and humanity. His voice, trusted and beloved by millions, shaped pop culture like no other. But he was so much more than a voice; he was a man of great integrity, deeply respectful of those striving to uplift the arts.
As the creators of SOVAS and the Voice Arts? Awards, we knew we had to honor him at our inaugural event. But how do you ask Darth Vader himself to grace your stage? With hope, we reached out to our friend, Broadway producer Stephen Byrd, who connected us with James’ assistant. Joan Baker (VP, SOVAS) and I soon found ourselves on a call with James, sharing our vision for SOVAS. He was intrigued but cautious. He invited us to see his Broadway show, You Can’t Take it With You, and meet him afterward in his dressing room.
That conversation became much more than a pitch. James wanted to know who we were as people. We talked about our lives, shared stories, and even laughed about the wrestling scene between him and Robert Duvall from "A Family Thing," one of his favorite films. Then, he suddenly suggested that we take a photo together. Joan and I leaned in as if we might otherwise be cut out of the photo. James quickly directed the scene, telling us, “No. Don’t lean in. Stand tall.” Then he clasped our hands, grounding us in that unforgettable moment.
James surprised and delighted everyone by attending the Gala, bringing his entire Broadway cast along to share in the celebration. His presence, his laughter, and his humility was all a gift. We were blessed to love him, to honor him, and to witness his extraordinary life.
James Earl Jones, we will stand tall, as you instructed, and carry your spirit with us always.
The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences extends our condolences to his family and all who loved him.
