Another outstanding #2025SOT for the Ronald B. Tjalkens, PhD lab! I was honored to receive the OTA Postdoctoral Achievement Award, one of our amazing PhD. students Omar Yanouri won 1st place in the Toshio Narahashi NTSS Poster Competition, and Aidan Briggs took home the WIT Undergraduate Achievement Award (and we are super lucky that she has decided to stick around for grad school!) So great to see everyone and can’t wait for next year’s Society of Toxicology (SOT) in San Diego!

The awards provided through the Society of Toxicology (SOT) Endowment Fund significantly shaped my career as a trainee, particularly those offered by the Drug Discovery Toxicology Specialty Section-Society of Toxicology (DDTSS-SOT) and the SOT Mechanisms Specialty Section. I am ecstatic to be announcing at this year's Annual Meeting and ToxExpo the launch of a new fund: the McKeeman Early Career Award (MECA) in Mechanistic Toxicology, named in honor of Lois Lehman-McKeeman. This award is intended to highlight early career scientists within 10 years of receiving their highest degree (MS/PhD) who have a strong background in mechanistic toxicology and a passion for mentoring. We have 3 short years to raise the necessary funds to make this a permanent Endowment Fund and begin providing awards to eligible recipients. This week, I had the incredible opportunity to present my research—conducted alongside my lab members—on characterizing an AHR-deficient Xenopus tropicalis frog line at the Society of Toxicology (SOT) 2025 Annual Meeting and ToxExpo! This work, done at Kenyon College and the Marine Biological Laboratory, was exciting to share, and I’m grateful for the insightful discussions and new connections I made throughout the conference.
