?? Unlocking the Math Behind Our Decisions: A Recap of Dr. Warshauer’s SIAM Talk ??? Last week, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics at Texas State University chapter hosted an inspiring and eye-opening session with Dr. Hiroko Warshauer, Associate Professor of Mathematics, who took us on a journey into The Mathematics of Voting. ?? Dr. Warshauer’s talk, Decisions, Decisions: The Mathematics of Voting, highlighted how the way we vote can dramatically influence the outcome—even with the same data! Through engaging activities, she demonstrated four different voting systems (plurality, runoff, ranked choice, and Borda count), each producing a different winner from identical preferences. To make the concepts even more relatable, we cast votes for our favorite candies, uncovering surprising results based on the method used. The session wrapped up with a brain-teasing riddle about deriving vote counts from aggregate results, sparking insightful discussions. Whether you're a math enthusiast or just curious about fairness in decision-making, this talk proved that math is everywhere, shaping the outcomes of elections and decisions in unexpected ways. A huge thank you to Dr. Warshauer for showing us how numbers, logic, and systems converge to impact our world—and for making math so much fun! ?? ??? Missed the session? Be sure to join us at future SIAM events for more opportunities to explore the fascinating ways math intersects with our lives. #MathInAction #VotingMathematics #SIAMTxSt #FunWithMath #FairnessInDecisions #TxStateUniversity

At the SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference I had the chance to reunite with two of the most inspiring women I have ever met. To the left is Minerva Cordero. She was my Abstract Algebra Instructor in grad school and my mentor when I was part of the GK-12 Grant where I learned so much about Math Ed. Minerva was an IF/THEN Ambassador for the AAAS, received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM), and was recently selected to be a Fellow of the AWM among many other outstanding awards. To the right is Ingrid Montes. She was more influential in my early career as my Organic Chemistry Instructor. While doing my undergrad degree, I joined her mentoring program where I learned a lot about conveying scientific ideas to other students. She was awarded the ACS volunteer service award, received the Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering Award from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and was selected to be a Fellow of the ACS. But most importantly they are both amazing Puerto Rican women and I was able to dance salsa with both of them at the SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference! Thank you so much Minerva and Ingrid, I could not have made it this far without you!
