SER Supports the Launch of the Target 2 Resource Guide. SER played a key role in developing a new resource guide released at COP16. The guide provides a roadmap for integrating ecosystem restoration into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, offering practical resources and emphasizing the importance of communication with stakeholders, including practitioners, implementers, and Indigenous Peoples. It builds upon initiatives like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration FAO's Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM). SER collaborated with FAO and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) on the development and launch this new resource, "Delivering restoration outcomes for biodiversity and human well-being – Resource guide to Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework." Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dj9vvaVa We encourage everyone to explore the guide and join us in working toward the ambitious goals of Target 2. Photo from Left to right: George D. The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) has identified a framework of eight principles that explain, define, guide and measure the activities and outcomes of ecological restoration practice. #PrincipleThree - #ReferenceEcosystems / Whilst reference sites may be rare in regions with few protected areas, reference models, developed during the #baselineinventory phase of planning, will describe the approximate condition the site would have been in had degredation not occured. This condition is not necessarily the same as the historic state. #principlesofecologicalrestoration #internationalstandards

?? A Milestone for Sustainable Reforestation in Madagascar! ?? The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) has been featured in Radio France Internationale’s article on its recent launch at #COP16. ?? Developed by a coalition of partners that includes Botanic Gardens Conservation International & Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and funded by the UK’s Darwin Initiative Extra, TGBS sets a new benchmark for sustainable reforestation. This rigorous scheme supports global biodiversity by ensuring tree planting projects foster local ecosystems and avoid harmful practices, like using invasive species. ?? In Madagascar, ecologist Narindra Ramahefamanana from Missouri Botanical Garden Madagascar Research & Conservation Program highlights TGBS’s impact on restoration in Ambatsirongorongo—a rainforest seeking certification to enhance local biodiversity. With this label, we aim to support stakeholders, including the private sector, in delivering reforestation with proven positive outcomes. ?? The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) has identified a framework of eight principles that explain, define, guide and measure the activities and outcomes of ecological restoration practice. #PrincipleTwo - #Knowledge / Formal or informal, knowledge is the product of observation, experimentation, trial and error - and everything is valuable. The best available knowledge should inform the design and implementation of ecological restoration, and contribute to #adaptivemanagement. #principlesofecologicalrestoration #internationalstandards

This is a hugely important initiative for climate and biodiversity and is soon opening up for stakeholder consultation. The proposed Peatland Standard for Ireland builds on years of experience. #Peatlands #ClimateAction #Sustainability #PublicConsultation #EnvironmentalImpact #Ireland
?? Pre-Announcement: Public Consultation on the Peatland Standard for Ireland Peatland Finance Ireland is excited to announce the upcoming launch of a public consultation on the Peatland Standard for Ireland V1.0, designed to protect, restore, and sustainably manage Ireland's peatlands. The Peatland Standard will quantify ecosystem improvements like carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and water regulation using voluntary market principles to support finance for restoration projects. We invite all stakeholders to participate and provide your feedback starting October 30th. The consultation will run for four weeks, closing November 29th. Your input will be instrumental in shaping the future of peatland conservation in Ireland! Stay tuned for more details on how to get involved. ?? #Peatlands #ClimateAction #Sustainability #PublicConsultation #EnvironmentalImpact #Ireland Landscape Finance Lab WaterLANDS Peatlands Matter Association Ramsar France Biodiversity Credit Alliance CDC Biodiversité BioBeo EU European Research Executive Agency (REA) Verra https://lnkd.in/g399m9c4

Applying SER Standards is crucial for addressing the complex dynamics of ecosystems, managing land use tradeoffs, and optimizing restoration strategies. By integrating diverse knowledge, promoting community engagement, and taking a holistic approach to enhancing biodiversity, this project in southern Sweden demonstrates the impact of standards-based ecological restoration. At Microsoft, we have set an ambitious goal to actively engage with and support the communities we operate in. Our aim is not just to create new jobs and digital infrastructure but also to advance community prosperity and well-being. In Roskilde, we have partnered with "Skjoldungernes Land," one of five national parks in Denmark, where they are dedicated to growing new, protected areas of nature with high biodiversity—a truly important task. Today, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours in the company of colleagues and forest volunteers from Roskilde, reconnecting with mother nature and helping to restore some of what has been lost. A special thanks to Hans Christian Jessen and Henrik Dansh?jgaard from The Danish Nature Agency, Thomas Vestergaard-Nielsen from The National Park Skjoldungernes Land, as well as Bj?rn and all the volunteers for a pleasant, active, and insightful day. We look forward to following the progress and hopefully being able to support and lend another helping hand in the near future. Lastly, a shoutout to my colleagues and their families who came out today. Nature is essential for people and the global economy, and our ambition is to protect more land than we use by 2025.

CVC hosted the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) Ontario Chapter for their last field trip of the year, highlighting some of our stream #restoration and tiny forest projects. Our staff was very excited to provide industry professionals with a space to discuss and learn more about important issues, such as removing online ponds, the necessity of stakeholder consultation, and the merits of tiny forests as a tool for education. Thank you to SER for coming to learn with us and we hope to collaborate again in the future!

Wrapping up a fantastic week at the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) North American Conference. The WWF-Canada booth showcased some of our restoration projects, including partnerships with First Nations, our Nature and Climate Grant program, re:grow and the newly launched Mission Restoration. Deandra, James and I had some interesting and insightful conversations throughout the week. The conference covered so many topics, and there were some truly fantastic presentations - lots of food for thought. A few topics I keep revisiting and thinking about include: 1) The importance of collaboration. There is so much work to be done, to meet our international commitments but also to reverse biodiversity loss and climate change. Working together, sharing knowledge and resources is the only way forward. 2) The concept of novel ecosystems, how they present in different geographies, and how to balance the desire to restore with the realities of degraded conditions. 3) Priorities. Who's priorities? What do we value? What concessions are we okay with making? Which voices get heard and listened to? 4) The role restoration can play in reconciliation, and conversely, the role reconciliation and Indigenous experience and expertise must play in restoration. Looking ahead, we may not have all the answers yet, but we know we cannot wait - the stakes are too high.
