My #Investigative Tip of The Day: Don't underestimate the power of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. You would be amazed by the wealth of intelligence that is available by conducting a simple request - agencies generally MUST comply, obviously there are a few exceptions. Remember, if you are obtaining records, "Any/all" is your friend, but don't rely on the agency to get what you need. If you request an investigative report from a police department, you may only receive the primary officer's report. Make sure you expand to include body worn camera footage, 911 audio tapes, supplemental detective reports etc. Once you receive your records back, review and utilize the intelligence gathered to conduct additional requests based on what you learned - this is a multi step process! Building a strong investigation is like building a house, you start with a strong foundation. From there, you can build up! When I was a sworn detective, I often completed a single search warrant on a residence, a cell phone, a computer system etc. From there, you would conduct additional search warrants each time you received the intel back and learned something new!
