Going to a city that doesn’t align with your values? Here is a way to offset by donating to charities-like carbon offset
关于我们
SocialOffset is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation (EIN secured; IRS confirmation pending) created to provide event organizers and their attendees with a tool to offset the economic impact of their event or stay in a city where local legislation and laws are not in alignment with their individual values. The “offset” is realized when an attendee elects to make a donation to a recommended list of local charities and/or organizations that support those impacted by particular laws that may be in conflict with the attendee’s personal values. (This is similar to a carbon offset.) The two guiding principles of SocialOffset include: 1) We validate and align with attendees’ discomfort and potential unwillingness to visit a city where the state has laws that go against attendees’ core values. 2) We do not support boycotting cities based on the laws passed by their states. o Boycotts are bad for America because it will further divide the country. o Boycotts are bad for destinations because individuals (many from marginalized groups) who work in related industries (e.g., hospitality) will be negatively impacted. o Boycotts are bad for event planners because site selection will become near impossible to manage as different political and social justice issues attract and repel different audiences. Given these guiding principles, SocialOffset’s sole intent is to raise money for local charities whose missions align with attendees’ core values. These values may be related to reproductive healthcare, anti-racism, lgbtq+ rights, hunger, homelessness, environmental, etc. SocialOffset allows organizations and individuals to continue to contribute to local economies while also providing direct support to those who live in those localities, with no threat to any individual’s employment.

It feels like the house is on fire, doesn’t it? But now is not the time to panic. Purpose driven association and nonprofit leaders are concerned about how the 50+ Executive Orders and countless presidential directives issued in the past three weeks will affect their work, and how best to respond. No matter how they voted last November, many people are now feeling angry, sad, afraid, disappointed, confused, and overwhelmed. It’s understandable. It’s also intentional. Most people can’t track everything—that’s by design. Because social impact comes from sustained strategic focus, not scattered awareness and shameful rollbacks. As the consequences flowing from the rapid fire of Executive Orders and directives begins to hit us full tilt, sustaining focus and moving forward together in alignment with our values is easier said than done. That’s why I accepted the invitation from Grant Carpenter, CAE and ASSOCIATION SOCIETIES ALLIANCE to facilitate a discussion with business, nonprofit, and technology attorney Brett R. Harris.?We want to help association executives and their boards leaders do the heavy lifting.?Will you join us? Let’s talk about the changes and what lies ahead for DEI and accessibility moving forward. We’ll clarify legal obligations versus volunteered anticipatory compliance and provide practical insights on how associations can build and sustain a nation that is #FairForAll.? ???What are the key issues you think we should include? What actions has your organization already taken? Do you have a burning question? Drop them in the comments or send me a DM if confidentiality is a priority. I wrote about Social Offset when it first started, and now it's celebrating its second anniversary. An alternative to boycotting, its mission is to help organizations and event attendees offset?spending in destinations whose laws do not align with their core values by making it easy to donate to local charities that do. As a journalist, I don't usually publicly support an organization, but I encourage you to take a look if you're not familiar with Social Offset. #LGBTQ #socialjustice SocialOffset Destinations International American Hotel & Lodging Association International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) Convention Industry Council ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership Skift Meetings

In 2022, Elena Gerstmann, PhD, FASAE, CAE and her wife, Beth Surmont, FASAE, CMP-Fellow, CAE, attended a conference in a US state that had recently passed an anti-LGBTQ+ policy. Both wondered if they should boycott the conference, until they realised: wouldn't it be better to create a platform that would help delegates donate their money to offset expenses that went against their core values? Thus was born SocialOffset, a non-profit organisation that offers a conscious alternative by facilitating donations to local charities. Below, we speak to Elena about her social activism: https://lnkd.in/dRswRS3g

In this challenging time in our society, many event organizers and attendees have undoubtedly faced the difficulty of planning or attending conferences in destinations that have passed legislation that don’t align with their values. While boycotting an event or a destination is an option for attendees or meeting organizers, there’s a strong argument to be made that bans are ineffective, harm local businesses, and stifle dialogue. Unsatisfied with boycotts, Beth Surmont, FASAE, CMP-Fellow, CAE, vp of event strategy and design at 360 Live Media, and her wife, Elena Gerstmann, PhD, FASAE, CAE, executive director of?INFORMS, brainstormed an alternative: SocialOffset, a platform that enables event organizers and attendees to support local charities working to offset troubling policies or conditions in a particular destination. Launched in early 2023, the platform has has organized campaigns with 103 events and raised thousands for charities focused on at least one of six areas: racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality, hunger relief, housing security, environmental sustainability, and reproductive freedom.?
