Nyshell Lawrence's philosophy is: If you have the capacity to expand your business, do so. It can bring in more revenue and brand awareness, giving you a better chance of gaining new customers. Nyshell turned her lifelong love of reading and desire to support Black women into Socialight Society, a local bookshop in Lansing, MI that caters to Black women who often lack representation in traditional bookstores. But, no matter how passionate she is about the books she curates or the Black authors she features, profit margins in bookselling are just too small these days to achieve success from that alone. Instead of giving up on her dream, she decided to build out multiple revenue streams like: -Selling gifts and custom merchandise -Opening their space for event rentals -Offering creative consultations Rather than taking away from her core business, these revenue streams have given Nyshell the freedom to run her bookstore the way she wants without having to stress as much about income.
